Voted ‘Best Dorms’ again

Once again, our student housing environment was recognized as one of the best in the nation. The website, Niche, since 2015 has recognized our institution among the top universities and colleges in its annual Best Dorms rankings.

Once again, our student housing environment was recognized as one of the best in the nation. The website, Niche, since 2015 has recognized our institution among the top universities and colleges in its annual Best Dorms rankings, which are calculated largely through student satisfaction surveys. This year, we retained a high mark of excellence as the No. 2-ranked institution among all public universities in the United States. That distinction is testament both to the outstanding individuals — staff and students — who maintain our facilities’ operations as well as the friendly, neighborly culture of our on-campus residents. “Home away from home” is a bit of a cliché these days, but the phrase is absolutely accurate in describing SVSU’s housing environment.

Black History Month kicks off

February is Black History Month, and SVSU has a number of events lined up throughout the next four weeks. As for the first week of February, 2012 alumnus Vance Fulton will appear as part of The Multicultural Alumni Speakers Series tonight at 6 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge. Vance, who earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting, now serves as an internal auditor at Adient, the world’s largest seat manufacturer.
Our university will host the 19th annual Bridge Center MLK Youth Symposium Friday from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Curtiss Hall banquet rooms. The topic for this latest symposium is “Be the Change.”
Dawn Hinton, professor of sociology, will discuss “Why We Celebrate Black History Month” next Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Alumni Lounge. During her presentation, Dawn will explore the motivation behind the creation of Black History Month. Please stay tuned to this space throughout February for weekly reminders about all of our Black History Month events, and please attend them as your schedule permits.

2-2 for SVSU

2-2 for SVSU Button

Friday, we hope to raise funds to support 55 new scholarships for SVSU students during the third annual day of giving, 2/2 for SVSU. The SVSU Foundation has set a goal to raise $55,000 from our alumni, and they are off to a good start, as two graduates – Fred Harring, B.A. 1984, and John Stadwick, B.B.A. 1983 – have pledged to match the first $20,000 in gifts received. Many of you donate generously to SVSU and your support is greatly appreciated. If you are able to support this effort financially and/or by building awareness through your social media posts, please do. Information is available online at

Also next Thursday, Feb. 8, I will deliver the annual State of the University address at 4 p.m. in the Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts. A reception will follow the presentation. Please join me as I reflect on the institution’s accomplishments since last year while forecasting the challenges ahead ... and outlining strategies for meeting those challenges.

Competing in style and substance (and high GPAs)

New, sleek Athletics bus from Mitchell Motorcoach featuring images of student-athlete alumni on its exterior.

Some of you may have seen the new, sleek Athletics bus from Mitchell Motorcoach arrive on campus Wednesday. Featuring images of student-athlete alumni on its exterior, I am sure the vehicle caught the eye of motorists all across the northern I-75 corridor during its maiden voyage transporting our men’s and women’s basketball teams to Lake Superior State University for contests this evening. Both teams will be back in action at home next Thursday, Feb. 8, when the women play at 6 p.m. and the men play at 8 p.m., both against Michigan Tech.
You can also support the track and field teams when we host the Northwood and Tiffin Triangular this Saturday, Feb. 3, at 10 a.m. in the field house.
Please join me in congratulating the women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams, which both earned Scholar All-America Team honors from the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America. The women’s team earned a collective 3.43 GPA during the fall semester while the men’s team earned a 3.22 GPA. Go Cards!
