Commencement celebration

Collage of images from the December 2017 set of commencement ceremonies.

I would like to thank everyone who helped to make last weekend's commencement ceremonies a wonderful event for our graduates and their families. Our speaker, Rob Vallentine of The Dow Chemical Company, offered a personal and thoughtful address, and the graduates who crossed the stage will join our growing, enthusiastic alumni family. I was disappointed I was not able to be present for the ceremonies - I continue to recover from back issues - but I watched the proceedings online and I look forward to rejoining all of you on campus in the new year.

Outstanding student research

Alissa Rhode in a screen shot from the Cardinal Close Up video

I was impressed to learn recently that Alissa Rhode, an athletic training major from Grosse Ile, authored a paper that will be included in The Journal of Sports Medicine and Allied Health Science. Her paper is titled "Injury and Illness in Marching Band and Color Guard Members and the Need for Athletic Trainers: A Critically Appraised Topic." This is quite a feat for an undergraduate, and speaks to the high caliber of our students and faculty.  Alissa’s faculty mentor David Berry, professor of kinesiology, said, “If I had a word to describe her work ethic, it would be ‘tenacity.’” To all the tenacious Cardinals out there: thanks for your hard work this year.

College of Business focus of economic luncheon

IMages from the College of Business & Management presentation to Great Lakes Bay Economics Club.

We hosted the monthly Great Lakes Bay Economic Club luncheon on Monday, Dec. 18 where business leaders from across the region gather to network and exchange ideas. Both Anthony Bowrin, dean of the College of Business & Management, and Andy Bethune, executive director of the SVSU Foundation, were presenters at the event. They discussed how the planned College of Business & Management building expansion and technology improvements will benefit our students and faculty, and the region's business community.

Alternative Breaks

Our students continue to embrace our institution's commitment to serve communities here and elsewhere. This week, 90 students are participating in eight Alternative Breaks projects across the U.S., working with nonprofit organizations as far south as Miami all the way up to Niagara Falls, New York. Their goals include restoring homes for low-income families, helping the needy better understand how to own a home, educating communities on how to reduce poverty, improving water quality, and offering aid to survivors of human trafficking. Upon their return, many of these students engage in volunteer service for a nonprofit organization in the Great Lakes Bay Region devoted to a cause similar to what they experienced on their Alternative Break.

Athletics action

SVSU Athletics will be relatively quiet over the holidays, but our basketball teams will return to action before much of the campus returns in January. The women's basketball team plays at home against Lewis Saturday, Dec. 30, at 1 p.m. The men's team also plays at home that same day vs. Indiana Tech at 3 p.m. Both teams return to conference play when they host Purdue Northwest Thursday, Jan. 4, with the women's team tipping off at 6 p.m. while the men's game begins at 8 p.m. Go Cards!

Until next time …

Here is a reminder that campus will close, beginning Friday. We will return Wednesday, Jan. 3. Your fine work on behalf of our university is appreciated. Enjoy your well-deserved time off with family and friends. I look forward to seeing all of you again in 2018. In the meantime, please enjoy this video wishing you a safe and happy holiday season.
