President’s Weekly Update - Week of Monday, Oct. 5

Governor’s Higher Education Summit

I attended Gov. Snyder’s Higher Education Summit in Grand Rapids this week, and I’m pleased to report that six of our eight Board of Control members attended, as well. SVSU was well-represented, and it was noticed. One topic of the summit was working together to promote the collective strength of Michigan’s public universities in a “Pure Michigan” style campaign. Much work remains to be done, but I left the summit feeling encouraged about some of the possibilities ahead.

Family Weekend

We are looking forward to another fine Family Weekend. Our colleagues in Student Affairs and elsewhere have many activities planned for students and their family members who plan to visit. In addition to special events such as movies, games, scavenger hunts and the like, and special meals by Dining Services, we also welcome families to attend our theatre production, our Athletic contests, and more. I hope you and your family engage in these as you are able.  Full schedule and more...

Congratulations, Callejo

Many of our colleagues are engaged in exceptional scholarship, and I always feel a great sense of pride when we receive external validation of this. The latest example comes courtesy of David Callejo Perez, associate provost, whose book, “Curriculum as Spaces: Aesthetics, Community, and the Politics of Place,” won this year’s O.L. Davis Outstanding Book Award from the  American Association for Teaching and Curriculum. Congratulations, David.

Market Research Workshops Concluding

My continued appreciation to all of you who have taken time to participate in the market research workshops on campus. This week, we also hosted workshops in the communities of Bay City, Midland and Saginaw. For those of you who were unable to attend an in-person workshop for whatever reason, we will be distributing an online workshop you may complete. All of the data and insights gained from these workshops will be gathered and analyzed in the coming weeks, and we expect to receive a final report and recommendations by the end of the calendar year to help us strengthen the SVSU brand and enhance our student recruitment efforts.

ABC 12 School Spirit

I am an early riser. My plan for tomorrow is an early morning arrival at the Ryder Center for the ABC 12 morning show, as they will be broadcasting live on campus from 5 to 7 a.m. for their “School Spirit” segment. Our students have plenty of spirit and I look forward to seeing it on display. The entire campus will have an opportunity to donate nonperishable food items for the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan as part of this. My thanks to our colleagues in the Student Life Center for coordinating this. To the students getting up early (or staying up late) to show their Red Pride, I offer my encouragement. See you tomorrow. Go Cards!
