Our theatre production of “And Then They Came for Me” continues this week with local school groups visiting in the morning and public performances at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. This play incorporates multimedia to combine videotaped interviews (with Holocaust survivors Ed Silverberg and Eva Schloss) with live actors recreating scenes from their lives during World War II. The survivors were contemporaries of Anne Frank, famous for her diary. Silverberg was her first boyfriend and Schloss lived in the same apartment building in Amsterdam. The play is a wonderful learning opportunity for our students and for those in the audience.
We expect to see a good many alumni return to campus this weekend for 50th anniversary Homecoming activities. Prior to that, you can expect to see our students involved in any number of activities intended to make this an enjoyable time. You’ll undoubtedly see various displays around campus and a select few students campaigning for Homecoming king and queen. A group of them also will devote their Friday to a service project: cleaning the Saginaw Children’s Zoo. A full schedule of activities is available at http://www.svsu.edu/discover/homecoming.
As we move forward in our pursuit of seeking to be classified a “community engaged” university by the Carnegie Foundation, we have hired a new service learning coordinator, Kerry Rastigue. She comes to us from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor where she was working on accreditation efforts for the School of Social Work and on an e-portfolios project. She also previously worked in U-M’s Career Services office. Kerry has a law degree and a master’s degree in social work. Many of you will be meeting her over the coming weeks and months. Please make her feel welcome.
The Board of Control meets in regular session next Monday, Oct. 14. Two of the items they will consider are accepting our annual financial audit, and making renovations to the Regional Education Center to provide suitable space for our colleagues from our sister institution, Ming Chuan University in Taiwan.
