SVSU has a basic skills requirement for all students in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. After meeting the admission requirements through TOEFL score or ELP courses, undergraduate students must take tests in Reading, Writing and Math for placement purposes.
Reading proficiency is determined through the use of the Nelson-Denny reading test, which is a test of vocabulary and reading comprehension. Results will place you into one of four possible outcomes:
Writing proficiency is based on a 40-minute writing sample, which is graded on the basis of content, organization, grammar and academic language use. Results will place you into one of four possible outcomes:
Mathematics proficiency is determined by a math test. Study materials are available for download on the Math Center website. Results will place you into one of four possible outcomes:
You may retake the Math Test by visiting the Math Center in SE 106. You may not retest in Reading or Writing.
