SVSU understands that the COVID-19 virus has caused traditional TOEFL and IELTS test centers to be closed, making it harder for our students to take the tests we normally require for admission.
For Fall 2020 admissions review, SVSU will now also accept scores from iTEP's Academic Plus or the TOEFL iBT Special At Home Edition. SVSU reserves the right to require additional testing from any students admitted based on these scores. Additional placement testing will be provided during our Fall Orientation.
Scores needed to be eligible for each level of admission:
|iTEP Academic Plus Scores|
|English Language Program||2.4-3.5|
|Undergraduate||3.6 or above|
Please check back to this site frequently for updates as they become available if additional tests will be accepted.
The English language requirement for undergraduate admission is based on either an acceptable English proficiency test score per the table below, successful completion of SVSU's English Language Program (as a candidate for undergraduate admission), successful completion of 24 academic credits at a US Community College or University, or successful completion of an English course equivalent to SVSU's English 111.
Prospective graduate students must meet the minimum language requirement for their program before admission.

Students may be admitted with a TOEFL score as long as the subscore for Speaking is a minimum of 10 and subscore for Writing is a minimum of 7. Students providing a TOEFL score will undergo ELP placement during orientation to best determine the most appropriate level of instruction.
Students with an IELTS score must have a minimum overall score of 4.0 with no subscore less than 3.5.
Undergraduate applicants with a score below the minimum language requirement may be conditionally admitted to an undergraduate degree program. Upon successful completion of the English Language Program, students conditionally admitted can begin their undergraduate degree program. Students interested in conditional admission should choose “Yes” to Study in the ELP on the first page of the application.
Conditional Admission is not available for applicants to our graduate programs.
Saginaw Valley State University reserves the right to require in-house testing for students with noticeable discrepancies between official test scores and demonstrated skills.
The English language requirement is waived for students who have completed their high school or university studies in certain countries.
Please contact the office of International Admissions at email@example.com to see if your country qualifies.
