Technology Update for October

It's October! Hopefully you've gotten into the swing of things for Fall semester. As a follow-up to August's Technology Update, we have some new information about two systems on campus.

SVSU Hosts Gilbertson Hall Building-Naming Ceremony

Saginaw Valley State University will host a building-naming ceremony for Eric. R. Gilbertson Hall Monday, Oct. 13 at 10 a.m., as the facility previously known as the Regional Education Center is formally re-named.

SVSU pianist joined by clarinetist in concert

Saginaw Valley State University’s Carl Angelo, artist in piano and organ, will perform a piano recital Wednesday, Oct. 8 in SVSU's Rhea Miller Recital Hall. He will be joined by clarinetist Kip Franklin for the concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Consumers Energy Donation Promotes STEM Education to SVSU Students

Saginaw Valley State University has received a gift from the Consumers Energy Foundation to support academic programs with an emphasis on adding engineering talent to the STEM pipeline. Consumers officials presented the check to SVSU Friday, Sept. 26.

SVSU gives science award to Vassar student with plans to own family farm

Saginaw Valley State University sophomore and Vassar native Landon Zwerk recently received the school’s S.K. Yun Science Award, given annually to one or more SVSU students showing enthusiasm for studying natural science.

SVSU Theatre Presents ‘Grapes of Wrath’

Saginaw Valley State University will produce the play, “The Grapes of Wrath,” to celebrate the novel’s 75th anniversary. The play won a 1990 Tony Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award. It follows the Joad family in their journey from the dust bowl of Oklahoma. Almost 40 SVSU students from a variety of majors make up the cast.

SVSU’s Carolyn Wierda to discuss worldwide education trends in annual Rush Lecture

The delivery of education near and far will be examined by Carolyn Wierda when she gives the 2014 Rush Lecture at Saginaw Valley State University Thursday, Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. in Founders Hall. An executive-in-residence and interim associate dean in the College of Education, Wierda’s talk is titled, “From Other Hemispheres to Our Home: National, State and Local K-12 Educational Trends.”

SVSU named Military Friendly for 4th straight year

Saginaw Valley State University’s commitment to veterans and military personnel has been recognized by being named to the Military Friendly® list of schools for the fourth consecutive year. Selected by Victory Media, the list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America's military service members, veterans, spouses and dependents as students, and ensure their success on campus.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. At the end of the month, we have an FBI specialist coming to campus to talk about cyber security and how to keep yourself safe with technology. The presentation will be Tuesday, October 28 from 1-2pm in the Ott Auditorium.

Reporting Data Security Incidents

Even after taking the right precautions, accidents happen, systems fail, people are fooled, and sensitive data may be compromised. Prior to such an occurrence, it is important to know what to do when a data security incident occurs. All potential security incidents involving sensitive information should be reported immediately.

Clarinetist Kip Franklin to perform in recital at SVSU

Clarinetist Kip Franklin will be joined in concert by clarinetist Sandra Jackson and pianist Garik Pederson Saturday, Oct. 11, as part of the second annual Clarinet Day and Artist Recital at Saginaw Valley State University. The concert begins at 6 p.m. in SVSU’s Rhea Miller Recital Hall; it is free and open to the public.

Dow Corning Foundation and SVSU power Midland H.H. Dow student STEM initiative

The sun isn't the only factor powering Ellen Lavigne's interest in solar energy. With the help of Saginaw Valley State University and the Dow Corning Foundation, the junior at Midland's H.H. Dow High School is working to build a miniature solar-powered car.

SVSU student impresses Quicken Loans CEO during internship

Rosalie Stackpole knows how to seize opportunity. As one of 1,000 summer interns for Quicken Loans, she was determined to seek out new challenges. “I went in with the attitude that I’m here for a reason,” Stackpole said. “I would speak up at meetings. ”Only a few weeks into the summer, Stackpole received a rare opportunity for an intern: she was part of a team that prepared a marketing campaign proposal they presented directly to Quicken’s CEO.

SVSU names John Decker as Associate VP and General Counsel

Saginaw Valley State University has appointed attorney John Decker to the newly created position of associate vice president and general counsel. Decker comes to SVSU from the law firm Braun Kendrick, where he was a partner and had worked for 34 years, including 12 years as managing partner.

Gilbertson Hall to pay permanent tribute to SVSU’s 3rd President

Throughout the nearly 25 years of his presidency at Saginaw Valley State University and during a career that spans more than four decades, Eric Gilbertson has remained committed to higher education. That commitment earned permanent recognition Monday, Oct. 13 as SVSU’s Regional Education Center was formally re-named Gilbertson Hall.

The Saginaw Valley State University Board of Control voted to grant emeritus status to Tai-Chi Lee, who recently retired from SVSU after 26 years of service, during the Board’s regular meeting Monday, Oct. 13.

Several musicians in the Saginaw Valley State University community will perform in a virtual pipe organ recital Tuesday, Oct. 21 in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. The 7:30 p.m. recital will feature SVSU's new Hauptwerk virtual pipe organ; it is free and open to the public.

Valerie Adams has an extraordinary record of accomplishment at Saginaw Valley State University. Her latest achievement: gaining acceptance into the highly competitive Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Duke University.

Saginaw Valley State University student Pedro Marin has been selected as the First Year Student of the Month by the National Association of College & University Residence Halls. The association represents 597 colleges and universities across the U.S. and select other countries, including Canada and Qatar.

Saginaw Valley State University will host more than 80 employers during its Fall University-Wide Employment and Networking Fair Friday, Oct. 24. The event runs from noon to 3 p.m. in the Curtiss Hall banquet rooms.

SVSU Hosts Saginaw County College Night Monday

Saginaw Valley State University will host Saginaw County College Night Monday, Oct. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Curtiss Hall banquet rooms. About 45 colleges will be in attendance to provide resources and opportunities for local high school students and their families. Michigan public universities will be represented as well as Michigan private universities, Michigan community colleges and universities from Ohio and Indiana.

Best-selling author to explore America's educational system during SVSU talk

Author and investigative journalist Amanda Ripley will explore the state of America's school systems during a lecture at Saginaw Valley State University. Ripley's talk, “A Global Quest To Save America's Schools,” is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. in SVSU's Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts. The event is free and open to the public.

Dow Corning Foundation and SVSU growing love of STEM at Saginaw middle school

Diamond Weakley had a sense she wanted to become a science teacher someday. Now, the seventh grader at Thompson Middle School in Saginaw is quite sure of it. “Classes like this help me feel that way,” Weakley said of the learning taking place inside the science class of teacher Lori Hall.

The internationally acclaimed Duo Diorama will perform in concert Saturday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Saginaw Valley State University's Rhea Miller Recital Hall as part of SVSU’s Rhea Miller Concert Series. The duo includes Chinese violinist MingHuan Xu and Canadian pianist Winston Choi.
