Excellent professors. Talented college students. Regional high school students and their teachers looking for ways to enhance their love of music. Why not create opportunities to bring the two together? That is why the Department of Music at SVSU offers several outreach opportunities to area schools and high school students.
As part of the Department of Music's outreach, it offers select clinics including the voice masterclass (ran by Dr. Rachel Andrews), the choral clinic (run by Prof. Kevin Simons) and a jazz clinic (run by Prof. Jeff Hall). These opportunities are geared towards high school students and ensembles.
Valley Steel is an organization that includes two steel bands: one for students and one for adult community members. The student group had a successful first performance in April 2013 and we launched an adult community group in September 2013. The program's website is located at http://blhaskett.wix.com/valleysteel
Please contact Dr. Brandon Haskett for more information.
Major Chords for Minors is a Saginaw non-profit organization that provides free music lessons (keyboard, guitar, and percussion currently) for Saginaw students in grades 3 through 12. The SVSU Department of Music is collaborating with them to offer a choir in a downtown location once a week. Started in August 2014, the choir is directed by two current students and one recent alumna, and supervised by a faculty member. As we explore ways to expand our contribution, we look forward to other SVSU students becoming involved.
