Upon your arrival on campus, first check-in and obtain your room assignment and door access at the Housing Check-In Tent. Please bring a picture ID, as this is required for check-in.  

If arrangements were made to arrive early or after the scheduled check-in days and times go to the Housing Operations Office for your room assignment and door access. 

We encourage students to move only essential items and bring larger items after space and needs are determined. Please bring friends and family to help.

Important Housing and Check-In Related Information

What the University Provides:

Review the list of furnishings and other amenities provided. University furnishings are not allowed to be removed from the room. Residents interested in bringing additional or larger items (i.e. furniture) are encouraged to wait until after check-in and move-in to receive consent from roommates due to space limitations.

What to Leave at Home:

Be aware of items on the university's Prohibited and Monitored Items list. Students are not allowed to have pets (except non-carnivorous fish, Emotional Support Animals (ESA) and service animals, halogen lamps, spider lamps, open element appliances (George Foreman grills, heating plates, toaster ovens, etc.), open flames (candles, incense, etc.), weapons, firecrackers, and metal-tipped or plastic-tipped darts and dartboard. Possession of items on the prohibited list will result in fines and possible disciplinary actions. 

Requests made via email to the Housing Operations prior to check-in and move-in may be granted pending space availability. Students requesting room changes after check-in and move-in must submit their request to their Resident Director after the first ten days of the semester. 

Mattresses are 36" x 80" and are also called extra-long twin.

In an effort to protect our residents and comply with FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), Housing Operations will not disclose directory information except to students of SVSU. Students may also elect to remain unlisted by contacting the Registrar’s Office.

Students may access housing directory information via mySVSU portal under Self-Service.  

Residents are instructed to provide the following contact information to family members and friends in cases of emergency or concern.

Residents are instructed to provide the Resident Assistant on-duty cell phone number.

Desk operations are located in the lobbies of all Living Centers. Desk staff can assist with contacting on-duty staff and local phone numbers. Any customer service issue can be reported to the desk operations staff. Overnight guests must register with the desk operations staff by midnight.

Residents may check out vacuum cleaners, brooms and other items through the Front Desk Operations.

Mail and packages are delivered by 4:30 p.m. Monday – Friday.  The University does not participate in Saturday delivery. 

Mail and packages may take extra delivery time as SVSU participates in a central mailing operation with Delta College using the “48710” zip code. Hence, express shipping of packages is not recommended, as express shipping only guarantees to drop shipments at the university and not to the end recipient. Once a package has been received and is processed, students will receive an email with instructions on how the package can be picked up. The package will either be in a locker in the MJ Brandimore House lobby or able to be picked up at the front desk of MJ Brandimore House.

Typically, your school address is not your permanent address. Therefore, residents cannot complete a change of address form through the United States Postal System. As a result, it is important to update your temporary mailing address with businesses and other important individuals. The same is true when vacating SVSU housing, mail and packages will only be delivered to students residing on campus. Housing Operations does not forward mail or packages upon your departure and they will be returned to the sender. Students are responsible for providing their permanent and current mailing address to the SVSU Office of the Registrar.

This will be used to access meal plans, reserving library materials, access to main entrances for select housing locations, among other purposes throughout campus.

Each suite or apartment is fully equipped with an operational cable television hook-up.  Charter Communications is SVSU’s service provider.  Students must provide the coaxial cable and television equipped with a digital QAM tuner.

Wireless access is available in all housing areas and on campus. Information regarding access can be found at www.svsu.edu/its. Questions can be directed to IT Support Center at (989) 964-4225 or via email at support@svsu.edu.

Students must comply with the Internet and Network Resources Acceptable Use Policy.

Computer labs are also available for students who do not wish to bring systems.

All SVSU resident students are eligible to register one vehicle for parking in resident lots on campus at no charge. Upon receiving a housing assignment, students may apply on-line via “Manage my Account” for a parking permit (SVSU user name and password required) or complete the process upon Housing Check-In. Permits will be available at Parking Services on check-in and move-in day for all pre-registered individuals.  All overnight vehicles must be registered through University Police. Upon check-in and move-in day, all vehicles must be parked in the assigned residential lot by midnight. 

Overnight guests must register their vehicles with University Police and Parking Services and park in designated overnight parking lots only. There is a $5.00 fee per night for overnight guest parking.

Residents are reminded to always lock their vehicle and remove valuable belongings. Motorcycles are considered motor vehicles and must be operated and parked in areas designated for all vehicles. Motorcycles are not permitted on lawns, near or inside the buildings.

SVSU residents traditionally choose to communicate using their personal cellular telephones. The university recognizes that cellular coverage may be inconsistent within the freshman residential facilities. Courtesy telephones are located in the corridors of freshman residential facilities. Local telephone service is provided at these courtesy phones.

Residents assigned to freshman residential facilities who have unique circumstances or would otherwise like to be considered for an in-unit phone are advised to contact Housing Operations at (989) 964-4255.

For long-distance calls outside the Saginaw, Bay City or Midland area, require students to dial nine first. 

Damages: Residents are provided with room condition forms to document room and furnishing conditions at move-in. Room condition forms should be submitted within seven days of occupancy to any unit. [Room Condition Report (175KB)  ] Residents are liable for missing items or actual damage to the unit or any ancillary facility (hallways, stairwells, lobbies, study lounges, laundry rooms, etc.), including furniture, appliances, equipment and for maintaining the unit in a safe and sanitary manner. In the event of such damage, the university will hold all residents of a unit jointly liable for damage charges, and resident(s) will be billed accordingly. Please report any damages immediately so that responsibility can be determined while occupants are still residing. The list of damage fines are below:

Every attempt is made to determine parties responsible for any and all damages that occur. In the instance where responsibility cannot be determined, the charge, including labor, will be distributed among all residents of the facility.

University property, other than furnishings assigned to the licensed premises, is not allowed in student rooms. Such items will be removed and a charge will be levied to the occupants.

Early arrival requests can be submitted via email to housing@svsu.edu with the following information. Requests must come from the student's SVSU email address. Coaches and Advisors for programs will work with Housing Operations directly for any approved early requests.

Requests approved may incur a per diem charge on the date of check-in through the first billing date of the semester.

Residents are encouraged to have all immunizations up to date upon move-in. Meningitis vaccinations are also strongly recommended.

Residents shall be responsible for maintaining such renter's and liability insurance as the Resident chooses. The university shall have no responsibility for the personal possessions of the resident. 

Tentative room assignments are posted on the mySVSU portal under Self-Serve (Cardinal Direct). If you do not have access to the internet you may call Housing Operations to inquire. Students may contact roommates via their SVSU email account.

By signing the Housing Contract, students agree to make payment(s) according to the payment schedule. If students plan to utilize scholarships, student loans or any other student financial aid, they must submit the appropriate application materials to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid in a timely manner to ensure adequate time to complete any required review processes and their ability to meet payment deadlines. Failure to meet payment deadlines will result in the student's removal from registered classes and university housing. Students are not released from their Housing Contract if they re-enroll during the contract period.

A limited number of loft kits are available for university housing bed furniture (Living Centers, University Village, and Pine Grove 7800-7809 buildings only). Only university-provided lofts are permitted. The fee associated with the loft kit request is non-refundable once delivered. Students are responsible for loft kit assembly and tear down.  

Loft kits can be requested by emailing housing@svsu.edu using the student's SVSU email address and including the following:

A $50 fee will be assessed to the student account once delivered. The fee is subject to change.

The university strongly encourages all students to register additional contact information in SVSU Campus Alert (Emergency Notification System). Enrollees receive official notifications via voice, text and email communications in the event of a critical incident or campus closing due to adverse weather. Updating contact information takes just a few minutes and can be completed online by visiting the SVSU Campus Alert Login.

Although pets outside of non-carnivorous fish are not permitted in campus housing, documented Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) and service animals are. In order to have an ESA or service animal reside in university housing, students must apply to be approved through the Office of Accessibility Resources and Accommodations.
