Password Change Policy Overview

Background:

When you get the following email message, its time for you to change your password:

Following SVSU's new password policy, your password will expire on: mm/dd/yyyy.  You will have a limited number of grace logins; when those are gone you will not be able to log into any network-based technology services at SVSU (Vmail, VSpace, etc.), so please change your password today.(Colleague users, we are not asking you to change your Colleague Usernames & Passwords.)

Please go to the SVSU home page, click on the "Quick Links," and click on "Change Network Password."  We do not provide the links here so that you know this is not a phishing attempt to obtain your password.

If you have any questions regarding this procedure or the validity of this e-mail, please contact the Support Center at:  964-4225 or (toll free) 866-827-4357.

1) Your mother’s maiden name
2) Your place of birth
3) A question you write

You can (must) change your password at:
Change Your Password.

In addition, you can not reuse a password for 365 days.

Why are we Changing Passwords??
The routine changing of passwords is in response to pressures from security focused legislation (GLBA, Sarbanes-Oxley, PCI, etc.) and auditors. As a result, universities are moving toward requiring their passwords to change on a regular basis, multiple times a year (just like banks, etc.). SVSU is no exception as we have moved to changing passwords 3 times per year.
