I knew I wanted to come to SVSU when I was a high school freshman. I’d come to campus on a tour with my sister, my mom and my aunt, and I remember thinking how pretty it was and how friendly the people were.
Once I was ready to enroll, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study. I was strong in math and science, so I wrote to the deans to learn more about the programs. Brooks Byam, a professor in the College of Science, Engineering & Technology, invited me to meet with him. He convinced me that mechanical engineering was the right choice for me, and I’ve never looked back.
It’s a tough curriculum, and my senior design class is especially challenging, but it’s also really rewarding because we’re doing real work for a local company.
Scholarships have made things a lot easier for me. I’m able to spend more time on my studies and campus activities, which has made me learn a lot about myself. And it feels good to know I’m not adding financial stress to my family.
I’m Megan VanFleteren. At SVSU, I’m designing my future, and your support helps . . . because every gift counts.
