The Matt Barghahn Scholarship was established by a gift from Burger King Corporation in recognition of Matt’s selection as one of the nation’s outstanding scholar athletes.
Matt Barghahn, a four year letter winner, was an outstanding SVSU football player and captain of the team during the 1997 season. As an SVSU student-athlete, Matt achieved exemplary levels of performance and was named a Michigan Division II Scholar Athlete of the Year.
The Matt Barghahn Scholarship is awarded to SVSU football players who have demonstrated a high level of scholastic achievement, good citizenship and leadership potential.
• Member of SVSU’s intercollegiate football team
• Junior or senior status
• Cumulative GPA of at least 3.0
• Demonstrated good citizenship, evidenced by a commitment to community service
• Demonstrated leadership potential
The scholarship award may be continued for one additional year, contingent upon continuing conformity to the above criteria and maintaining eligibility status as defined by both the university and the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
The amount of the scholarship award is intended to provide for the payment of tuition and fees, limited by the full payment of those amounts. The director of athletics will select the recipient in consultation with the head football coach and the director of scholarships and student financial aid. Financial need is not to be used as a consideration in the selection process. The Office of Scholarships and Student Financial Aid will disburse the awards according to regular University fiscal procedures.
