2019 Scholarship Recipient

250 pixels wide Brooke OlesonFor Brooke Oleson, FIRST Robotics is a family event. Her dad and older brother would spend countless hours after school with the robotics team st St. Joseph High School, which led her to start volunteering when she was in eighth grade. She has continued to volunteer every year since—continuously increasing her involvement and level of responsibilities. Even now, as a student as SVSU, she remains connected to FIRST
Robotics because of the influence it’s had on her life. “I feel like if I didn’t, something would be missing that’s a big part of who I am.”

When a college admissions representative visited Brooke’s high school and told her that her involvement in FIRST Robotics qualified her for a private scholarship at SVSU, she jumped at the opportunity to apply. Brooke earned her spot as a 2019 recipient of SVSU’s FIRST Robotics scholarship, awarding her with $16,000 ($4,000 per year for up to four years) to help fund her education. She was excited that her involvement in
an organization she is so passionate about would lead to such substantial scholarship assistance. “I was shocked— it helped take the financial stress off.” This scholarship is helping the elementary education major reach her goal of becoming a teacher and building a stronger community.
