Admission Requirements

Master of Education – Teacher as Leader (Educational Leadership)

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and obtained teacher certification in the State of Michigan or have an out-of-state teaching certificate that is recognized by the State of Michigan

A completed application for admission including a $25.00 non-refundable application fee to include:

  • Official copies of all undergraduate and graduate transcripts from any college or university where college credit was earned
  • A copy of most recent teaching certificate. If you need to obtain a copy of your (current or expired) teaching certificate to submit with your application, you may retrieve a copy though the Michigan Department of Education Certification site.
    • Please note:  Applicants who have recently completed a teacher preparation program at another institution must attach a letter to the application from their home institution confirming they have successfully completed all coursework and state testing requirements and are eligible to be recommended for certification.
    • Applicants who have not earned a teaching certificate and are seeking admission to a graduate program requiring teaching credentials must receive approval from the appropriate department chair or faculty advisor before admission can be granted.  When completing the personal statement within the application, applicants must explain why they are seeking admission and how this academic program will apply to their professional goals.  Please note:  Completion of a graduate program does not lead to a Michigan teaching certificate.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS must complete the International Student Application for Graduate Admission , including all items listed above as well as provide:

  • A current résumé
  • A one-page statement of accomplishments and academic goals
  • Two letters of professional reference
  • A score of 550 (or 213 computer based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for applicants whose native language is not English or successful completion of SVSU’s English Language Program (ELP)
  • Evidence of financial support
