Elementary TE Application Requirements

Please note:

  • Please read all of the instructions below before completing your application.
  • If you are completing a K-12 major, you should submit the Secondary Education application form.
  • If you plan to major in Special Education, Elementary-level applicants should complete the Elementary application, and Secondary-level applicants should complete the Secondary application.

Instructions to Apply
Between Friday, August 26, 2016 and Friday, September 16, 2016, applicants will use the College of Education’s Tk20 data management system to complete their application, upload most of  the required supporting documents, and follow-up with a scheduled appointment with a COE staff member during the week of Monday, September 19 through Friday, September 23, 2016 to review the application materials, submit official transcripts that are required (with the exception of SVSU), and schedule an interview for the program and fingerprinting which will take place in Gilbertson Hall.

1. Log in to Tk20 and complete the elementary or secondary application in its entirety. Click here for assistance on how to create an account in Tk20 to complete the application: Tk20 Application Instructions (299kB)

2. Be prepared to upload the following documents into your electronic application (MS Word or PDF are acceptable):

a. A copy of your class schedule for the upcoming semester; SVSU students may obtain a copy from Cardinal Direct;

b. Candidates currently enrolled in any prerequisite course(s); e.g., PSYC 313 at another institution at the time of application, must submit evidence of enrollment (class schedule) in the class(es);

c. A copy of your MTTC Basic Skills or Professional Readiness test results in Math, Reading, and Writing. Only required if you did not request your scores to be sent to SVSU at the time you took the test(s);

d. A copy of your summary of documented experiences with children and/or youth. This document will be shared with the interviewers and you may be asked questions about your experiences during the interview.

e. If you answered “Yes” to any of the criminal conviction questions, a copy of all court documents which show the crime of which you were convicted, dates, and sentence(s) imposed must be uploaded with application. (Please see note at the bottom of these instructions);

f. SVSU Criminal Background Check Information (self-disclosure form). A link to the form is embedded within the application in Tk20.

g. LiveScan Fingerprint Request form. A link to the form is embedded within the application in Tk20.

h. You will need to provide the name, title, and telephone number of three individuals who have agreed to serve as references for you in your online application.  At least one reference should be from a full-time or part-time faculty member from a two- or four-year college/university.  Other acceptable references could be from individuals with whom you have had interaction through educational preparation in the last year; e.g., school administrators, teachers, etc.

i. Letters of recommendation are not required. However, if you would like to upload a letter with your application, you are welcome to do so.

Starting Monday, September 12, please schedule an appointment with Anne Reittenbach in the College of Education to review your application materials by stopping in to the College of Education Dean's Office (2nd floor, Gilbertson Hall) or by calling 989-964-4646. Appointments must be scheduled prior to the Monday, September 19 through Friday, September 23 application review period.  The appointment will take about 10-15 minutes. Anne will review your application and supporting documents submitted through Tk20 and schedule an appointment for you to come in for your interview and to have your fingerprinting done. Keep in mind that you will need 1 ½ hours for the interview process (completing a writing sample and meeting with the interviewers).

Note: In preparation for the interview, please review the College of Education’s Conceptual Frameworks model (  Some interview questions will be based on this model.

Also during the appointment, you must submit the following documents:

  • Official transcripts from all former institutions (submitted in a sealed envelope by that institution).  You do not need to submit an SVSU transcript.  Transcripts that are submitted with the application become the property of the College of Education.  If additional coursework has been taken at any institution since initial admission to the University, it becomes the responsibility of the candidate to submit a new official transcript to the SVSU Registrar’s Office to obtain an updated transfer evaluation.  PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD TRANSCRIPTS PRIOR TO YOUR SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT.
  • Any of the required documents listed in Step 1 that you did not upload with your application in Tk20.

Please Note:
A criminal background check will be required of all candidates who submit an application to the SVSU College of Education Teacher Education Program.  This process is required by the school districts, public and private, to allow program candidates to participate in the fieldwork component of the program.

If you have been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor or have any outstanding criminal charges or warrants pending against you in Michigan or any other state or jurisdiction, you will be required to submit court documents indicating the crime of which you were convicted, dates and sentences imposed with your application materials.  If criminal charges are pending, you will be required to submit a statement from the issuing court indicating court date and offense.
Admission to the Teacher Education Program does not guarantee certification by the State of Michigan.  The SVSU College of Education cannot guarantee approval of any recommendation made to the State of Michigan for any type of certification.  Final approval of a recommendation is granted only by the Michigan Department of Education, based on the policies and procedures current at the time the recommendation for certification is made.
Any candidate admitted to the Teacher Education Program, is required to notify the Chair of the Admissions and Transitions Committee, should s/he be convicted of a crime in any state or jurisdiction after the initial background check is completed.  Court documents indicating the crime for which a candidate is convicted, dates, and sentences imposed, and any information on pending criminal charges must be supplied by the candidate and will be reviewed by the SVSU Admissions & Transitions Committee.  Based on a review of the conviction or pending criminal charges, the candidate may be subject to dismissal from the Teacher Education Program.
