Marie Tapert is an artist and designer, born and raised in Detroit and is a graduate of Wayne State University. Marie's working background has included advertising, graphic, furniture and product design. These influences reflect but do not define her painting, sculpture, drawings and mixed media pieces. As a mentor to younger artists, she has instructed children and adults at Wayne State University, Cranbrook Academy of Arts and at the Detroit Institute of Arts with innovative approaches to creativity.
Artist Statement:
I work in my studio surrounded by tools, materials and ideas. Through the forging of these elements, I respond to the political, social and natural world around me. Visual information passes through me and is directed, then redirected, a reflection of the way the world goes, not necessarily in a straight line. Controlling materials and being directed by them, energizes my personal acts of improvisation. The constant and contentious dialogue I have with myself; what to keep; what to give up; when is it done? The process is the basis of my work. Marie Tapert.
