Dual Enrollment

SVSU partners with school districts throughout the state to offer high school students the opportunity to take college classes. This allows high school students who have moved beyond the curriculum available in their school to continue to advance their education.

  • Complete and submit a Dual Enrollment Application (1,117KB)
  • Ask your high school counselor to send your high school transcript and SAT scores or ACT scores (if taken) to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
  • SAT/ACT scores are NOT required they can be added to your file at any time and can either be sent officially through CollegeBoard.org or ACT.org. Unofficial score reports with your full name clearly identified on the report can also be emailed to transcripts@svsu.edu.

Please return all documents listed above to:

Saginaw Valley State University Office of Undergraduate Admissions
Attn: Dual Enrollment Coordinator: Samantha VanHorn
7400 Bay Road
University Center, MI 48710

If a student plans to dual enroll in SVSU courses for more than one semester, they need to submit an updated dual enrollment form and a current copy of their high school transcript to SVSU's Office of Undergraduate Admissions for each additional semester.

Students are allowed to submit paperwork up through the first day of that class for the term. They will not be allowed to do late registration after the class has already begun.

Please contact Samantha VanHorn at (989) 964-4208 with any questions about the application process.

Some high school students may be eligible for enrollment in SVSU courses while completing high school graduation requirements. Student eligibility to participate in dual enrollment is a local decision that should include multiple sources of information about whether or not a student is ready for a post-secondary educational experience. Therefore, a student must receive permission from a high school administrator/counselor to participate in SVSU's dual enrollment program.  The SVSU Office of Admissions will conduct a full evaluation of all transcripts, SAT/ACT scores (if taken), and other supporting application materials.

To ensure academic success, SVSU recommends that interested students who are at the 11th or 12th-grade level have a minimum 2.5 cumulative high school GPA. Each application is considered individually based upon the particular class the student is interested in taking. Students who demonstrate the ability to be successful in courses with established prerequisites may have the prerequisite requirement waived.

To be considered for dual enrollment admission, you must submit the following:

  • Completed High School Dual Enrollment Form
  • Official high school transcript.
  • SAT or ACT scores are NOT required for admission. If taken we highly recommened you send a copy of your score to be added to your admission file.

No application fee is required.

Up to three classes may be taken each semester with the approval of the high school counselor and SVSU's Office of Admissions.

Students must submit a new High School Dual Enrollment Form and updated high school transcripts each semester that they are interested in enrolling.

SVSU posts each semester of course offerings on an online course lookup tool called Course Schedule Lookup. Visitors may access this system 24/7 and do not need a login or password.

Access Course Schedule Lookup to find the course(s) you wish to enroll in.

  • Go to: Course Schedule Lookup tool
  • Enter the SVSU term you want to take the course, the course department and any other information you would like to include in your search and click the red "Search" button at the bottom of the page.
  • Find the course(s) that you wish to enroll in and keep track of the course information (ex: ACCT 213 Financial Accounting, Line #0268, Section #02, 3 Credit Hours).
    • When looking up courses make sure that the class status is "Open." This means that there are seats still available in the class.
    • If the course is full, please contact Amy Ross directly at (989) 964-4201 for alternative options to register.

Submit the course information on the High School Dual Enrollment Agreement prior to mailing it in.

  • The SVSU Office of Admissions will register dual-enrolled students for the course(s) you wish to take each semester once all application materials have been received.
  • The early application allows for earlier registration opportunities.

Once accepted as a dual enrollment student at SVSU, you are eligible to activate your SVSU email and online student account through Cardinal Direct. Detailed instructions including your SVSU student ID# and username will be sent through the postal mail along with your admission letter.

You should complete this as soon as possible so that you can receive important notifications from SVSU and pay any remaining balance not covered by your high school.

If you are unable to activate your student account or create your password, please contact the SVSU ITS Support Center at (989) 964-4225 (Toll-Free: (866) 827-4357) for assistance. Once you have successfully created your password, you will now have access to all online services for SVSU students by logging in with your SVSU username and password.

Billing authorization must be completed on the High School Dual Enrollment Agreement.

If the high school is agreeing to pay all or a portion of the tuition cost of the course(s), they will be mailed an invoice directly from SVSU. Checks can be made out to Saginaw Valley State University and returned to:

Saginaw Valley State University
Attn: Financial Services Center
7400 Bay Road
University Center, MI 48710

It is important to list the student's name and SVSU I.D. number on the check.

If the parent is responsible for paying all or a part of tuition/fees, remaining balances will be posted on the student's account through Cardinal Direct. Payments may be made online by check or credit card or made in person at the Campus Financial Services Center. Remaining balances must be made in full by the first day of class unless you have enrolled in the Cardinal Payment Plan, which can be found by clicking here.

All dual enrollment paperwork must be submitted and processed prior to the first day of the semester in which the student plans to enroll. No dual enrollment registrations will be accepted after the semester has started.

Student high school transcripts, SAT scores or ACT scores (if taken) and all supporting application materials are evaluated by a representative in the Office of Admissions to determine if the student is eligible to take their desired course(s). If necessary, the SVSU representative will contact the student and/or high school counselor to gather more information about the academic ability to register for a certain course. The student may need to contact the instructor of the SVSU course for special permission.

Dual Enrollment students are not required to take pre-requisites for most courses. However, students need to know that they will be expected to know all material covered prior to enrolling in their desired course(s).
