Frequently Asked Questions

Our advisors are trained in all majors/minors. You will not be assigned a specific advisor, so you can meet with any available advisor. In some cases, you will be referred to a cohort specific advisor, academic department or faculty member for additional advising information.

Additionally, first-year students can meet with one of our Peer Advisors. Both walk-in appointments and booked SOAR+ appointments are available on a regular basis for students who have less than 24 credit hours earned.

All first-year students must meet with a Peer Advisor or Professional Advisor at least once during your first year for your SOAR+ appointment – the final part of your orientation requirements.

Additionally, the following academic programs have advising requirements:

The following departments require their students to meet with a faculty advisor before registering for classes: Chemistry, Engineering, and Math.

The following departments conduct regular informational sessions on their majors and strongly recommend that you meet with a faculty advisor before registration: Nursing, Psychology, and Education.

The following departments encourage students to meet with faculty advisors on a regular basis: Criminal Justice, Kinesiology, pre-Social Work.

All students are encouraged to meet with an advisor (either a faculty advisor or one of our staff members) at least once each semester. Meeting early in the year is ideal and we encourage you to book an appointment well in advance of registration periods for course and degree planning to avoid high traffic times.

First Year students can meet with a professional or Peer Advisor. Walk-in appointments with a Peer Advisor available most days between 9 AM-4:30 PM. Want to schedule an appointment? Feel free to schedule a time via phone at 989-964-4286, in person in Wickes 117, or online by visiting our Outlook Bookings Webpage.
