A Social Studies major is available for those students who plan to teach history, economics, geography, and/or civics or government at the secondary level. It requires completion of the 56 hour major described below, and completion of professional development courses described in the Secondary Teaching Certification catalog entry.
Social studies are an area that focuses on society and humanity in order to develop knowledgeable, civically minded people. Teachers in social studies offer students skills to become civic decision-makers. This involves use of facts, an exploration of ideas across historical perspectives and openness to the world and other cultures. Nonetheless, students have to get a better understanding of America's history, geography, economics and the values of government before becoming productive members of society.
Study abroad opportunities are available in Italy, Ireland, United Kingdom and Scotland.
The Honors program lets students conduct original research within their field of study.
Education majors are eligible to apply for specific scholarships offered by SVSU.
