Secondary Education

About

Students in the Secondary Education program are trained to be encouraging, engaging and supportive of the next generation of learners. By focusing on growing relationships in both classroom and extra-curricular settings, the program ensures that each impressionable learner is served with compassion and dignity. With SVSU's low student-to-faculty ratio and special emphasis on student teaching opportunities prior to graduation, all Secondary Education majors actively establish the skillset to guide their future students. Through the expertise of faculty and by observing and working with talented teachers in the field, students are prepared for any placement in an urban, suburban or rural classroom working with a range of middle and high school-aged learners. SVSU's diverse range of education majors, minors and specialized endorsements, as well as opportunities to teach abroad, highlight the high-quality training that prepares each graduate to teach in any state or country of their choosing.

Cardinal Points

  • Secondary Education majors gain a lot of hands-on experience by interacting with SVSU's state-of-the-art Literacy Center, which offers the latest technology designed to assess a student's reading skills and build individualized lesson plans to help them.

  • Every year SVSU awards Secondary Education students with scholarships that are specific to education.

  • SVSU hosts the Annual Educator Leadership Institute, a three-day conference, which consists of a wide range of workshops and speakers focusing on the K-12 education system.

  • SVSU's Secondary Education Program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

SVSU's Secondary Education program offers a strong foundation in psychology and teaching. Students majoring and minoring in the program have the opportunity to get hands-on experience teaching in either a rural or urban environment. Life as a Secondary Education major or minor includes a strong curriculum, a student teaching opportunity and the option of studying abroad!
