As a Graphic Design student, you will learn the principles and practice of web design, logo and business identity design, typography, publication design, illustration, video production, animation, branding, and more. You will be exposed to the creativity of other outstanding contemporary artists whose works are exhibited in the Art Department Gallery, located on the first floor of the Arbury Fine Arts Center. Additionally, with professor guidance, you will develop your design portfolio and gain hands-on experience through projects and internships, preparing you for your journey into the professional world or graduate school.
Graphic designers create the ways we see and think about the world, rendering technical and emotional information as visual media, whether for marketing, education, or self-expression. SVSU’s Graphic Design program prepares students to analyze, understand, and communicate in the language of design. Students learn to apply their knowledge—innovating and creating new and effective designs. Small class sizes assure that students work closely with professors who are accomplished artists and professionals, developing their artistic talent, skill, and discipline. In addition to a rich and varied curriculum, that includes branding, animation, time-based media, web, app, logo, and typography design, SVSU graphic design students have access to numerous scholarships as well as opportunities to study abroad and exhibit their work in gallery settings. Renowned Artists regularly visit SVSU to speak and inspire students. SVSU enthusiastically fosters a diverse, supportive, and vibrant art community—a creative environment that students say feels like family. Graduates from the program go on to careers in business, education, and government, and/or enter highly respected graduate schools throughout the nation.
Education majors have a classroom experience in their freshman or sophomore year.
Integrated Science majors can study abroad in locations including Ireland, Italy, Scotland, and United Kingdom.
Small class sizes (30 student maximum) assure students receive close attention from faculty, such as faculty advising.
