About

Students in the Creative Writing program are dreamers ready to explore the depths of their imaginations on paper! With a wealth of resources and a wide breadth of scholarly, well-read faculty members, students are taught to build upon traditional aspects of literature to develop critical reading abilities, cultivate innovative writing skills and analyze complex texts. SVSU encourages students to hone their craft as storytellers and poets, reading and writing in small workshops to share their power of language, literature and writing to enrich their future careers.

Cardinal Points

  • The Voices in the Valley series brings renowned poets and fiction writers from across the country to share their work with the campus community.

  • All graduates of the Creative Writing program who have applied to graduate school have been accepted.

  • Creative Writing students can apply for the Seitz Creative Writing Scholarship to help fund their studies. 

SVSU’s Creative Writing program offers a strong foundation in creative non-fiction and fiction with courses in poetry and prose. Life as a Creative Writing major includes developing a unique literary voice while exploring the expansive history of each given genre. Students will receive an imaginative and novel education to prepare them for career in graduate school, publishing and everything in between!
