Creative Writing (BA)

About

Students in the Creative Writing program join an amazing community of writers devoted to sharing ideas, emotions, and experiences through words. Taught by faculty who are both award-winning authors and caring facilitators, students study a wide range of literature, develop critical reading abilities, explore diverse genres and modes, cultivate their own individual voices, and learn about publishing processes and possible careers. SVSU encourages students to share their work through an award-winning literary magazine, student readings, poetry slams, and visits with prominent writers

Cardinal Points

  • The Voices in the Valley series brings renowned poets and fiction writers from across the country to share their work with the campus community.

  • Creative Writing students who plan to apply to graduate programs receive individual counseling and have excellent acceptance rates.

  • Creative Writing students can apply for the Seitz Creative Writing Scholarship to help fund their studies.

SVSU’s Creative Writing program offers a strong foundation in fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction as well as immersion in both “classic” and contemporary texts that range across time, genre, and culture. Life as a Creative Writing major includes diverse opportunities to hone your craft through supportive small workshops that emphasize the power of language and the importance of inspiration, revision, and conversation.
