| Nova Jazz was
founded in 1974 by Tony Rongo (piano and vibraphone) and Phil Armetta (guitar
and bass), playing jazz clubs in the N.Y.C. area, often with extended instrumentation
such as reeds, brass, and drums. Lauren performed with the group in the
fall of 1978 and remained as an integral part of the group. Nova Jazz has
performed for many influential people and organizations. They include former
N.Y. Governor Hugh Carey, Stuart Mott, Exxon Corp., Hilton Hotels, etc.
The group has also performed at Lincoln Center, Rockfeller Center, and
many other cultural events in New York City with the Brooklyn Arts and
Cultural Association. In 1979, they won the Eubie Blake Award and
recieved it from Eubie Blake himself.
Nova Jazz was a very popular performing group in Michigan. While based in Lansing they performed for former president Gerald Ford, Gov. Blanchard, Gov. Milliken, Mayor Terry McKane, as well as many functions at MSU including the Jazz and Blues Festival. NOVA JAZZ has been passed to our son, Adam Rongo. With the untimely death of Tony Rongo, my husband, I have decided to end that particular part of my life. I will continue to play classical music, but jazz never again. There is no one else in the world who could play piano behind me but Tony. May The Perpetual Light Shine Upon my husband Tony 'till we meet again.
