Job Description
TITLE: Writing Center Tutor (Job ID #19148)
JOB SUMMARY: Provide writing tutoring and support to SVSU students and staff
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct individual tutoring sessions with students and staff (including native and non- native English speakers) on a walk-in or appointment basis
- Develop students' writing skills and ability to identify and address their own writing problems
- Continue to develop personal writing and tutoring competencies
- Conduct all work in a professional manner
- Attend all introductory training sessions and monthly staff meetings
- Conduct orientations and other presentations about the services offered in the Writing Center and/or specific aspects of writing
- Support compliance with SVSU policies governing copyright, fair use, ethics, and especially plagiarism
- Assist faculty and students to obtain services, utilize resources, access assistance from tuttors, and/or receive referrals to other appropriate offices
- Conduct all work in a professional manner
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral form
- Knowledge of English language rhetoric, grammar and usage (document formats, sentence structure, MLA/APA citation formats, etc.)
- Ability to establish rapport with learners
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Flexibility in scheduling work hours, including evenings (and/or weekends for the online Writing Center)
- Graduate or undergraduate student currently enrolled in SVSU classes with a minimum 3.5 G.P.A.
- Completion of two semesters (sophomore status), with at least two semesters remaining at the university
- Use of the Writing Center as a student, having participated in at least one tutorial session
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Two full-time staff members (Director and Coordinator)
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
As assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work will be performed inside the Writing Center, in classrooms on campus, or through the Online Writing Center
