Writing Center Mentor: Job Description
JOB TITLE: Writing Center (WC) Mentor
JOB SUMMARY: Provide writing tutoring and support to students on the SVSU campus
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct all work in a professional manner
- Conduct individual tutoring sessions with students and staff (including native and non- native English speakers) on a walk-in or appointment basis
- Improve students' writing skills and ability to identify and correct their own writing problems
- Continue to develop personal writing and tutoring competencies
- Assist with Writing Center record-keeping and filing, including handouts, session records, and materials
- Create and update Writing Center publications, specifically handouts, as directed
- Conduct orientations and other presentations about the services offered in the Writing Center
- Support compliance with SVSU policies governing copyright, fair use, ethics, and especially plagiarism
- Assist faculty and students to obtain services, utilize resources, access assistance from mentors, and/or receive referrals to other appropriate offices
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and oral form
- Knowledge of English rhetoric, grammar and usage (document formats, sentence structure, MLA/APA citation formats, etc.)
- Commitment to support university faculty and programs
- Ability to establish rapport with learners
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
- Flexibility in scheduling work hours, including evenings (and/or weekends for the online Writing Center)
- Graduate or undergraduate student in SVSU classes
- Completion of an SVSU Writing Center Mentor Application and a portfolio of individual writing
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Two full-time staff members (Director and Coordinator)
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: As assigned
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work will be performed inside the Writing Center, in classrooms on campus, or through the Online Writing Center
