Special Needs Permit

State handicap permits are valid at any designated handicap space on campus when a valid permit is displayed from the rearview mirror of the vehicle. Any metered space may be used without depositing coin when a valid permit is displayed from the rearview mirror of the vehicle.

All other special needs parking permit requests should be directed to Joyce Payne, Parking Services Coordinator, jep@svsu.edu, or by telephone 989-964-4140, who will assist individuals with unique circumstances.

Appealing a Parking Ticket:

Top 10 Explanations Given When Appealing a Parking Ticket

  1. I didn't see the sign
We are overloaded with information every day. The last thing we look at is signs. Parking signs and regulations are present to ensure efficient and orderly use of our parking resources.
  2. This was my first time on campus
As drivers of motor vehicles, we all travel to many different cities or locations that are unfamiliar to us. The responsibility is ours, however, to be aware of signs which provide parking information.
  3. I was only going to be a couple of minutes
Many of us have every intention of just running in and out of a building. The possibility exists that we may be longer than anticipated. It may be practical to park the vehicle in a free parking lot.
  4. "Someone" told me I could park there
Sometimes we ask a University employee, roommate, coach or friend where to park and they give us incorrect information. If we have a question regarding parking, who better to ask than Parking Services?
  5. I didn't know I had to have a parking permit
We all need to be pro-active. It is a good idea to check with Parking Services or the SVSU website for information at www.svsu.edu/universitypolice before rather than after receiving a ticket.
  6. Other cars were parked there, and they didn't have a ticket
There are instances where enforcement is done in one area and the officers move on to other areas as vehicles come and go. Every vehicle parked in violation will not always be issued a ticket.
  7. The lot was full and there wasn't anywhere else to park
Lot surveys are done yearly during fall and winter semesters in an effort to ensure adequate parking space on campus. On occasion, some parking lots may be full.
  8. I didn't know I had to put money in the meter
Whether parking at a meter on or off campus, payment is required. Meters are self-explanatory and will have days, times and payment required located within each meter head.
  9. The officer was just waiting to write me a ticket
Parking enforcement officers are very efficient and are expected to patrol all areas on campus. However, they are not instructed to "wait" for someone to be in violation of a parking ordinance.
  10. There wasn't a ticket on my car
Under Michigan law, the registered owner of the vehicle is still responsible for the ticket. Parking Services sends a postcard as a reminder.

Parking Lots

Signs located at the entrance to each parking lot indicate restricted times and usage for parking facilities. Many parking areas on campus are open to the public at no charge, although there are some restricted/reserved lots.

Vehicles parked on campus overnight must be registered with the Department of University Police and parked in designated parking lots only. Unregistered cars parked overnight will be ticketed and may be impounded. Call (989) 964-4141 for more information.
