Winner of the 1999 Tony Award for Best Play, Side Man is a memory play and a haunting story of a family whose patriarch is a jazz musician. The story is told from the point of view of Clifford, who shares the story of his alcoholic mother, his trumpet playing father, and his broken home. The action flows between the family’s apartment and a smoke filled jazz club, capturing the essence of an art form in decline and the poignancy of familial love and loss.

Act one opens at an afternoon rehearsal for a USO show in the South Pacific. Max, Lawrence and Patrick Andrews are rehearsing with pin-up girl Peggy Jones for the big show that night. What Peggy doesn't know is that the brothers are really just the stagehands for the show – her back-up singers didn't arrive in time, and the boys were recruited by the Major in charge to fill in where needed. Peggy soon discovers their true jobs (the 4F ailments that kept them out of the Army bubble to the surface as they rehearse), but she's convinced they'll do a fine job nonetheless. Of course, Peggy falling in love with sweet and stammering Patrick doesn't hurt their case either. Just as they assume all will work out well, a radiogram arrives with the news that the headliners for tonight's show, The Andrews Sisters, have been held in quarantine in Hawaii. The show must be canceled. Unless, of course, there's a way for the Andrews Sisters to appear...

The characters are as follows:
LAWRENCE - Baritone/Bass. His Andrews counterpart is LaVerne. His 4F ailment is incredibly poor eyesight. Lots of physical sight gags, perhaps the biggest clown of the group.
MAX - Tenor. His Andrews counterpart is Maxene. His 4F ailment is flat feet – ("but only the left one!"). He is the stage manager and attempts to remain in charge in the face of total disaster. Tap solo in act two.
PATRICK - Tenor/Baritenor. His Andrews counterpart is Patty. His 4F ailment is asthma. He stutters and stammers throughout act one, and generally sings lead in act two - front and center as Patty. His gentle, sweet nature makes it easy for Peggy to fall in love with him.
PEGGY - Mezzo-Soprano. Perhaps a cross between Betty Hutton and Betty Grable, Peggy has been branded a pin-up girl, and this show is her big chance to show everyone she's a lot more than just another pretty face. Warm, loving and sincere.
Intricate harmonies throughout for everyone. Peggy has two solo numbers in act two.
Setting: A small island in the South Pacific, 1945. Backstage at a U.S.O. Show. Lots of fun specialty properties and items are needed throughout the show.
The men do perform most of act two as The Andrews Sisters, returning as themselves for the Finale.
