In
1969, the first athletic team of SVC played its first season as
the SVC "Redbirds." The second season saw a new men's basketball
coach, Eugene Hamilton, and a new mascot, the cardinal. In the
spring of 1970, Robert Becker and Eugene Hamilton traveled with
the golf team to Berea, Kentucky for a golf tournament. At the
time, SVSC athletes wore maroon shirts.
After seeing
an actual cardinal, and purchasing cardinal paraphernalia from a
local gift shop, Becker and Hamilton decided the
cardinal would make a worthy SVSC mascot. This logo was created
to represent Cardinal athletics.
