William
A. Groening Jr., for which Groening Commons is named, was the first
chairman of the Board of Control when the school was chartered first
as a private college in 1963. He was re-elected chairman once Saginaw
Valley became a state college in 1965. Groening also served as vice
president and general counsel for The Dow Chemical Company until
he retired in 1977. Groening was involved in SVSU before it had
even been born. He was also a member of the "Committee of 100" and
the
"Committee of 300," which consisted of a group of people from Saginaw,
Bay City and Midland who met regularly to establish a college in
mid-Michigan. The end result of these meetings were Delta College
and what today is SVSU.
