Recovering from the fire of 1985, SVSC broke ground to build the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Gallery and the Arbury Fine Arts Center.

Also, Saginaw Valley State College professors with a significant research or scholarly accomplishment would be eligible for a cash award, thanks to the Dow Corning Corporation. Announcement of the $20,000 endowment to fund the Earl L. Warrick Excellence in Research Award came at a June 4, luncheon hosted by Dow Corning.

The award was named for Dr. Earl L. Warrick, a retired Dow Corning senior management consultant. According to J. Kermit Campbell, Vice President of Personnel and Public Affairs for Dow Corning, "Dr Warrick exemplified the ultimate scientist, manager and concerned citizen in our society.a combination we are proud to honor with the establishment of this award for outstanding Saginaw Valley State College professors." To be considered for the Warrick award, SVSU faculty must have completed research or scholarly work of the highest quality over and extended period of time. Selection of the recipient will be by a committee including one academic administrator, the previous year's recipient of the award, and a member of the SVSC's Board of Control.

Registration for Fall semester jumped up 8.2 percent compared to 1985, with 5,377 students signing up for classes. Total credit hours increased even more dramatically with the Fall students registering for 50,501 credit hours, a 10.6 percent increase over last years final count. This indicated that students were carrying somewhat heavier class loads. The average credit load per student then stood at 9.4 credits. Some college administrators felt the increased enrollment is at least partially due to the new instructional facilities on SVSC campus such as the IF2 complex.
