Enrollment applications to SVC were 158 percent ahead of the 1974
pace. In actual figures, 335 students were admitted for the fall
semester compared to 102 students for the same time last year.
The increased
interest in SVC, according to the director of admissions, indicated
a 20 percent increase in total enrollment for the fall. With that
projection, SVC would have a student body of 3,000 to 3,300 students
compared to 2,555.
To handle 500
to 600 more students in the fall, SVC's faculty needed to be increased
and additional classroom space needed to be found. The admissions
director cited a few possible explanations for the increased enrollement
including graduating seniors success at securing jobs or entering
graduate schools and the economic conditions that prompted students
to get an education close to their home. Other possible explanations
were educational programs offered by SVC that were appealing to
students, cooperative education, and the expansion of the athletic
program.

Valley College seniors, both music majors, won the college's Alma
Mater songwriting contest. Julie Beffrey and Shelia Hutek wrote
the words and music. The composition had its premier performnace
at the 11th Annual SVC Graduation on April 26 of this year. The
lyrics are:
"To
the white and red of Valley - We raise our banners high!
And in our hearts the memories of treasured days gone by.
Oh, Saginaw Valley College to you we'll ere be true!
You've given us your best, now we pledge our best to you!"
Fifteen songs
were submitted in the contest. The winners split a $50 cash prize.
