Mac OS Memory Help System Instructions.

You can use these instructions for accessing the Macintosh online Help system for other problems. However, these instructions are focused on how to get help for increasing the amount of memory a program uses when it starts up.

  1. OS 8.5 to 9.2.2
  2. OS 7.5.5 to 8.1

OS 8.5 to 9.2.2 Help System Directions

Access Macintosh Help by clicking on the Help menu item when the Finder is the active application.

If you're not sure that the Finder is the active application, go to the Application menu item, which is in the upper right corner of your entire screen.

If the Finder is active, the application menu icon will look like one of these two figures:

You will probably not have all the icons shown in the figures, but you will at least have the time and an icon in the far upper right.

If you don't see the Finder icon or icon and text, like below,

click on the icon or icon and text that is there. You'll get a drop down menu. Click on the Finder item that's listed. The menu will look similar to this figure:

With Finder as the active application click on the Help Menu item.

You'll get a drop down menu that looks like below. Click on the Mac Help item. OS 8.5 will read Mac OS Help.

When the Mac Help window appears, type "memory usage" into the text search box and click the Search button.

When the search list comes back, click on the item "Adjusting your memory usage".

When the "Adjusting your memory usage" window comes up, click on the link "Help me change the memory a program uses" and follow the directions that appear.

Access Macintosh Help by clicking on the Help menu item when the Finder is the active application.

If you're not sure that the Finder is the active application, go to the Application menu item, which is in the upper right corner of your entire screen.

If the Finder is active, the Application menu icon will look like one of these two figures:

If you don't see the Finder icon, like the pictures below,

click on the icon or icon that is there. You'll get a drop down menu. Click on the Finder item that's listed. The menu will look similar to this figure:

With Finder as the active application click on the Help Menu item. If you have OS 7.5.5 through 7.6.1 click on the question mark icon in the upper right; if you have OS 8.0 or 8.1 just keep reading. The OS 7.5.5 through 7.6.1 Help icon looks like this:

You'll get a drop down menu that looks similar to the picture below. Click on the Mac Help item. If you have OS 7.6 or 7.6.1 it will read "Mac OS Guide". In OS 7.5.5 the item will be called "Macintosh Guide".

If you have OS 8.0 or 8.1, click on the Help menu item towards the top left of the screen and select "Help".

For all versions of the Mac OS, you'll get a window similar to below.

Click on the "Look For" button.

The Guide window will change to this:

In the window above you can see that I've already typed in the search text of "memory". Type the word "memory" into your own Search window and click the "Search" button. You'll get a results window that looks like this:

Scroll down until you see the item, "change the memory a program uses?".

Highlight this item and then click "OK". Follow the directions that appear.
