Michigan Service Scholars Program

Program Description

The Michigan Service Scholars Program [MSS] will provide $300,000 in scholarships statewide to students attending Michigan Campus Compact [MCC] member campuses through a grant from The Michigan Community Service Commission and The Corporation for National and Community Service. Students willing to complete 300 hours of community service during one calendar year will be awarded a $1,132 scholarship, otherwise known as an AmeriCorps Educational Award, to be used for any educational purpose. Community service hours can be completed during the academic year and/or over class breaks. To complete 300 hours during a regular academic year, students would need to average 9.5-10 hours of community service per week.

MSS students need to complete their service by helping community agencies with volunteer recruitment and infrastructure and/or through youth programs. The three service categories are: Teacher Preparation, College Positive Volunteers, and Community/Faith-based Service. The host campus supervisor is able to determine which category a potential MSS student would serve under.

Each student enrolling in the program must attend a training to learn about the scholarship, AmeriCorps and citizenship. The trainings are held on different campuses around the state throughout the year.  The training, the 300 volunteer hours and the paperwork for enrollment and tracking are the ONLY requirements of this program.
