What is C.A.R.E.?

YOU can be a C.A.R.E. Cardinal!  It is Cardinals Actively Reaching Everywhere. As a Cardinal volunteer, you will have the opportunity to connect with others while building a stronger campus and local community.  A single act of kindness often leads to a lifetime of enriching experiences. Featured February International Volunteer Activity:

Haiti Relief Effort:
Help support the Haiti Relief Effort by donating necessary items (see complete list below). Grocery bags will be available with list of items that are desperately needed. Items will be collect February 1-28 in Student Life. All items collected will be donated to the Haiti Foundation Against Poverty.

MORE FEBRUARY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ... 

Gift of Life Campus Challenge:
Gift of Life, the Michigan organ and tissue donation program. Show your RED PRIDE and sign-up to save lives. Look for tables throughout the month to learn more and become an organ donor or sign-up online at Gift of Life. The campus challenge will run February 1-25.

Jeans for Teens:
Donate a new or gently used pair of men's, women's, or children's jeans and receive a 25% off coupon from Aeropostale for a new pair of jeans. Jeans can be dropped off in Student Life until February 14. Aeropostale will be donating jeans to Haiti as well as donating to a local teen shelter in Flint!

Valentines for Patients in Covenant Hospital: Come make a card for a patients at Covenant Hospital. All materials will be supplied in Wedge Lounge 1, Student Center, to make cards. February 8-11.

Community Village:
10 volunteers needed to help call and assist residents playing BINGO on Tuesday, February 9 from 6pm-8:30pm (includes travel time). Sign-up in Student Life.

Daffodil Days Sale:
Spruce up your desk, dorm-room or make someone smile and help fight cancer! Support the American Cancer Society by ordering a daffodil bouquet. February 15-March 4. Orders can be placed in Student Life, payment is due with order.

George Washington Carver:
20 students needed to help escort local high school students around SVSU's campus. February 17, 2010, 9am-1pm. Sign-up in Minority Student Service.

CAN (Child Abuse and Neglect) Council Mardi Gras Auction:
Help with set-up, clean-up, decorating, staffing auction tables, and check-out. The event will take place February 24-25 at Apple Mountain. Many flexible shifts available, contact Sara in Student Life to sign-up.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistant (VITA):
VITA volunteer's will help with Income Tax returns on SVSU's campus. Volunteers must complete basic, intermediate and advance training via www.irs.gov/app/vita. This will help people who cannot prepare their own tax returns. Sign-up on www.1-800-Volunteer.org for specific dates and times.

Covenant HealthCare Visiting Nurse Association:
Interested in gaining some real word experience in your field? If you are a nursing, therapy or business student this may be the opportunity for you! During your experience you would gain knowledge, experience, and skills through encounters with patients, families, and staff. If interested contact Becky at 989-583-3065.

Hospice Advantage:
Looking for volunteers to become co-facilitators for group program, Healing Together. Volunteers are required to attend training, but would gain clinical experience in the field. Contact Student Life for more information.

Sherwood Elementary Music Program:
Looking for students interested in helping make decorations for school music program from, 2pm-5pm. Dates: March 24 and 29; May 10 and 17. Sign-up in Student Life.

Marshall M. Fredricks Sculpture Museum:
SVSU's sculpture museum is looking for volunteers to spend a few hours a week working in the gift shop, archives, and much more!

Volunteer Award

This year Student Life will be honoring students who complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service beginning August 1, 2009 - April 9, 2010. These students will be honored at the annual Student Life Awards Banquet. The student who completes the most hours will be awarded at $250 SVSU bookstore gift card. A volunteer application and volunteer attendance record must be on file in order to be considered for the award. Please review the documents below for more information or contact Sara.
