How to Join?
Every Greek organization is different, but each contains many of the same dynamics. It is those commonalities that allow each organization to work with other organizations to enhance the Greek Life Experience. If you have the academics, dedication, pride, and can make a life long commitment to one of these outstanding organizations, then the only thing left to do is apply!

Hazing
What is Hazing? What is the University's stance on hazing?
- Any willful act by one student alone or acting with others, directed against any other student.
- Specifically forbidden hazing activities include, but are not limited to: paddling, creation of excessive physical or psychological fatigue, wearing any apparel which is conspicuous and/or not in good taste, stunts, morally degrading or humiliating games, forcing or coercing person to consume alcohol or unusual substances such as unprepared food, blindfold trips, or any other activity which is not consistent with fraternal law, state law and/or the policies of Saginaw Valley State University.
- Hazing is forbidden by Saginaw Valley State University and any chapter suspected of hazing will be investigated and may face judicial and criminal action. If hazing occurs, the chapter may be suspended or closed as well as other commensurate sanctions. Repeated hazing by the same organization will subject the group to permanent suspension from the university.
- All organizations that sponsor activities in violation of laws or regulations are subject to discipline under the State Code. In addition, all members and non-members who participate is this activity may be disciplined individually.
- The University will not tolerate hazing in any form.

What is a Fraternity/Sorority?

A fraternity/sorority is a group of men and/or women bound together by brotherhood or sisterhood and common goals and aspirations. They are an excellent networking group for later life. Fraternities and sororities provide "second families" away from home. Together these members learn, grow and share common bonds that last a lifetime. Fraternities and sororities help members develop strong and creative leadership skills that will help guide them to success.
What is Greek Life?
The Greek community is a diverse group of men and women belonging to fraternal organizations on campus.
What do Greeks actually do?
Greeks participate in many activities on campus and in the community such as Homecoming, Battle of the Valleys, Relay for Life, etc. Greek organizations also have their own philanthropies to which they donate time, passion, and money to annually.
Does it cost a lot of money to be in a fraternity or sorority?
Each organization is self-supported by dues paid by its members. There is a one time assessment fee that is required during initiation which varies for each organization. There are annual dues that are collected to assist in chapter operations such as a community service, scholarships, intramurals, and many of the social events offered.
What leadership opportunities do fraternities and sororities offer?
Every member will be able to take part in organizational activities as officers, committee chairpersons, or committee members. Fraternities and sororities provide a wide-range of interesting activities. You'll be able to get involved in planning a community service project, a dinner with another fraternity or sorority, a dance or step show, and new member recruitment. With these opportunities you learn as you go.
