Smoking Policy Change

In August 2007, the University announced an online forum that invited the SVSU community to register their opinions about the University’s consideration of changing its smoking policy from permissible smoking 25 ft. from a building to smoking only in strategically located smoking shelters, or to offer any additional suggestions. The forum was a response to what was viewed as a policy that was not working.

When the message board closed on September 10, a total of 402 comments had been received. Following the online forum, a student forum was held on campus. A second and final online forum was then offered, with an additional 90 comments. It was noted in the second Web-based forum that a decision regarding the University’s smoking policy would be rendered by November 2, 2007.

With all campus-wide input considered, the University will initiate the following Campus Smoking Policy, effective January 1, 2008:

“Smoking is prohibited on campus except in residential parking lots and lettered parking lots. However, in no case can smoking in residential parking lots and lettered parking lots take place within twenty-five feet of any building.”  Below is a map indicating the new smoking/non-smoking areas.

Enforcement of the University’s smoking policy has been and is viewed as a responsibility of the campus community. A referral system for reporting violations is outlined in the University Operations Manual (www.svsu.edu/newsmokingpolicy).

The University will continue its education and wellness efforts, including a forthcoming announcement from the Office of Counseling and Health Services regarding smoking cessation programs.
