Awards Received in Fiscal Year 2011-2012

College of Arts & Behavioral Sciences

  • Eric Gardner, Professor of English, received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities for his project, The Christian Recorder and American Print Culture in the Civil War Era.  This grant of $50,400 will support his research and publication goals that add to the body of knowledge of the academic community.

College of Education

  • Tamara Barrientos, Director of the SVSU Regional Mathematics & Science Center, received $57,864 from the Michigan Department of Education for the 2011-2012 Mathematics and Science Center Grant.  Her work to improve the quality of math and science instruction in our region continues to benefit the University and our surrounding communities.
  • Anne Tapp, Professor of Education Technology and Development, became a level 3 partner of the simSchool Modules Project, an asset of $38,600 from the Association for the Advancement of Computers in Education.  The 15 months of free online access to a working version of simSchool and peer-reviewed modules will prove beneficial to her and the faculty members involved in this project.

Crystal M. Lange College of Health & Human Services

  • Karen Brown-Fackler, Associate Professor of Nursing, received $34,943 and $54,497 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship Program and the Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students program.
  • Jeffrey Smith, Malcolm & Lois Field Endowed Chair of Health Sciences, received $40,000 from Field Neurosciences Institute to support his research projects on Degenerative Disc, Stroke, and Traumatic Brain Injury.
  • Charles Weaver, Assistant Professor of Health Sciences, received $5,000 from the Field Neurosciences Institute to support his Alzheimer’s Disease Study.

College of Science, Engineering and Technology

  • David Karpovich, H.H. Dow Endowed Chair, received $1,000 from the Kawkawlin River Watershed Property Owners Association to conduct testing for E-coli and Phosphorous in the Kawkawlin River.
  • Thomas Kullgren, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, received $200,909 from the U.S. Department of Energy for his project “Development of High Strength, High Fatigue Wind Blade Spars, Phase II.”  His partnership with Fulcrum Composites will provide students with experience in the field of high performance composites.
  • Tai-Chi Lee, Professor of Computer Science & Information Systems, principal investigator of NSF – MRI proposal has been awarded a grant of $123,144 from the National Science Foundation, with join efforts by Farid Hallouche (CSIS), Alan Freed (M.ENG) and Kassiani Kotsidou (ECE).  The grant will serve to acquire state of the art laboratory equipment that will be used to develop a customized computing platform based on FPGA’s for faculty research in the major area of computational science and engineering.
  • Rosalyn Sweeting, Assistant Professor of Biology, received $5,000 from the Field Neurosciences Institute to support her work, Tumorigenecity Study.
  • Robert Tuttle, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering, received $59,671 from the Office of Naval Research for the acquisition of a complete optical emission spectrometer and sample grinding station.  This equipment will enhance SVSU’s ability to conduct research with steel castings, as well as open up opportunities for collaborative research.    

Staff

  • Diane Boehm, Director Instructional Support Program & University Writing Program, received $1,070 from Michigan Campus Compact to mentor the expansion of the “Living Through Literacy” project.  The service this student organization provides is very unique and commendable.
  • Mamie Thorns, Special Assistant to the President for Diversity Programs, received $29,533 and $9,264 from the King, Chavez, Parks Future Faculty Fellowship Program and King, Chavez, Parks Visiting Professors Program.
