Library and Electronic Course Reserves
SVSU Students
Overview
- To supplement course materials, instructors reserve materials for use outside of class.
- Online reserves are available through your VSpace account.
- Hard copy reserves are available at the Library Circulation Desk with loan periods set up by your instructor.
- These reserves are kept at the Circulation/Media Services Desk on the first floor of the library and cannot leave the Circulation/Media Services Desk unless they are checked-out.
- Reserve items may not be placed on hold and overdue fines are assessed immediately.
Types of Reserve
- General Reserve
- These items are placed on reserve at the request of an instructor.

Faculty & Staff
Overview
- The Library offers both an in-house reserve (items kept on file at the circulation desk) and an electronic reserve (items placed online in VSpace) service for SVSU faculty.
What Can Be Placed on Reserve
- With some exceptions, we accept all items for in-house reserve.
- We may not be able to accept very large items or those items that require specialized equipment for viewing.
- Some examples of items that are placed on reserve are:
- One article photocopied from a given journal, periodical, or newspaper
- Materials created by the instructor
- Books
- Journals
- Media (videorecordings and audio CDs)
- Computer disks
Copyright Compliance
- All items placed on reserve must follow the fair use provisions from Secton 107 of the United States Copyright Act of 1976.
- Please review the SVSU copyright policy. The main points of Section 107 involve:
- The purpose and character of use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes
- The nature of the copyrighted work (factual/creative)
- The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
- The effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work
- All items placed on reserve must be legally obtained. (i.e. library purchased or personally owned materials)
Placing items on Reserve
Instructors who wish to place items on reserve will need to obtain copyright permission and complete the library's reserve form.
- Copyright permission is required when information that is published by another person is used in most circumstances.
- While there are some exceptions to the copyright permission rules, it is best to obtain permission before any use. Permission can be obtained through a clearinghouse (www.copyright.com) or by writing a letter to the publisher:

Dear Publisher or Copyright Holder:
I am requesting permission to place the following copyrighted material on reserve in print (i.e. photocopied) format and in electronic reserve (i.e. digital format) at Saginaw Valley State University.
[Citation]
Online access is restricted to the students enrolled in my course and is offered free of charge. A copyright statement appears on the electronic reserve screen as soon as the item is accessed.
Because time is of the essence, I would appreciate a timely reply to my request. Thank you for helping me provide fast and efficient service for my students.
Sincerely,

- The web page for the publisher may also contain information regarding copyright use and contacts.
- The library reserve form provides information we need to put an item(s) on reserve.
- When an item(s) is to be placed on reserve (whether it is in-house or electronic) we will need the form completed before processing
- If you are not personally delivering materials to be placed on reserve, please print and complete the reserve form (pdf)
- Without this form, it will be necessary to return the item(s) to you.
Electronic Reserves
- It is our policy to place all photocopied materials submitted for reserve on electronic reserve
- If you do not want items on electronic reserve, please note this on the reserve form
- The processing of electronic reserves does take a few days longer than in-house reserves, especially at the start of each term.
- When reserve items are submitted, we request that the electronic reserve module be inserted into your current account or a new electronic reserve account be created.
- While this is taking polace, the Circulation/Media Services department scans the paper copy of the reserve into a pdf format (using Acrobat Reader).
- Items created by the instructor can be placed on electronic reserve more quickly if a disk with the file accompanies the reserve request.
- Once the electronic reserve module is inserted, the Circulation/Media Services department will "upload" the pdf file so that it can be accessed by your students.
- Please note when the electronic reserve module is inserted into your existing account, the Circulation/Media Services supervisors will be added as instructors on the course.
- This is done so that the supervisors are able to add and edit the electronic reserves.
- If you prefer that the supervisors are not added as instructors, please contact Tammi Waugh at 989 964-4976 or e-mail him at tjwaugh(at)svsu.edu for alternatives to the electronic reserves.
Other things you should know about Reserves
- When items are placed on electronic reserve, only one copy of the item will be accepted for in-house reserve. The usual three copies will be placed on in-house reserve if electronic reserves are not used.
- At the beginning of the term, please allow for ONE WEEK before reserves will be available to students. As the semester progresses our turn-around time will be quicker.
- All reserves are returned at the end of each semester in compliance with copyright and fair use policies.
- All photocopied in-house reserves and electronic reserves will have the following copyright warning placed on them
Warning Concerning Copyright Restrictions
Under certain conditions specified in the United States copyright law (Title 17, United States Code) libraries and archives may be authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction may not be used for any purpose other than “private study, scholarship, or research,” and that only one copy be provided for scholarly purposes, unless copyright fees are paid. Further reproduction of paper copies may be in violation of copyright laws and is prohibited.
- Electronic reserves are converted to PDF format. Access to these reserves is limited to the students in your class and is made available free of charge.
