NOTICE: Concerning Copyright Restrictions
In using Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad), Document Delivery, or MeLCat, the requester agrees to abide by the fair use guidelines of the copyright law.
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.

- Articles are delivered electronically when possible
- All other materials will be mailed to you. It is your responsibility to return books to the SVSU Library:

Process
- ARTICLES
- Requesting
- All article requests are made on the ILLiad system either directly or automatically from links within database records. MeLCat does not support article requesting at this time
- When entering your request please be as complete as possible (note the required information fields on the forms).
- Please do not guess at the meaning of abbreviations, instead entering information as it appears on your citation
- Please enter special needs in the form's Notes field, especially if you are requesting an article in a language other than English
- If the article is owned by the Library we will deliver it to you electronically or make available for Library pickup using the Document Delivery system
- All article requests are made on the ILLiad system either directly or automatically from links within database records. MeLCat does not support article requesting at this time
- Receiving
- When possible articles are delivered electronically through ILLiad.
- When electronic delivery is not possible articles will be made available to pick up at the Library Circulation Desk. Unless otherwise noted, these articles do not need to be returned
- Please note: these articles are for your personal research needs only. They cannot be redistributed to others.
- Requesting
- BOOKS
- Ordering
- Required books for courses may not be ordered through ILL or MeLCat
- Whenever possible please prefer MeLCat to ILL/ILLiad for books. MeLCat is faster, has guaranteed loan and renewal periods, and is much less expensive.
- MeLCat books are requested by
- Locating the book on the MeLCat catalog
- Clicking on the "Get it" link
- Selecting "Saginaw Valley State Univeristy" on the drop-down institution list and entering your SVSU username and password
- NOTE: the prompt asks for "Your Campus ID#": instead enter your SVSU username
- ILL books are requested by
- Entering requests manually on the ILLiad system or
- Using the ILLiad link within database entries to automatically generate ILLiad requests
- Please enter special needs in the form's Notes field, especially if you are requesting a book in a language other than English
- If a book is owned by our Library we will check it out for you and make it available for Library pickup using our Document Delivery service
- Receiving
- Books are delivered to the Library and are made available for pickup from the Library Circulation Desk.
- Please note the due date and system (ILL (due date determined by the lending library) or MeLCat (due date is 21 days from pickup)) on the book slip
- Books not picked up within 1 week from receipt will be returned to the lending library and will not be reordered.
- Renewing
- MeLCat books can only be renewed online through the Library "My Library Record". Renewals are for 21 days
- ILL books may have renewals requested online through ILLiad, or by contacting Thom Zantow (tzantow@svsu.edu, 989.964.4238)
- Please note that ILL renewals are determined exclusively by the lending library, who also reserve the right to ask for the book back at any time. It is important to use ILL books as quickly and efficiently as possible
- Renewal information is delivered via email
- Returning borrowed materials
- ILL and MeLCat books must be returned to the Library Circulation Desk no later than the due date
- Overdue fines are $0.50 per day. At two weeks overdue you will be billed for the book and processing fees as determined by the lending library
- Ordering
- OTHER MEDIA
- Videos (VHS and DVD), audio CDs, audiobooks, etc. can only be requested through MeLCat.
- Since we do not loan these materials through ILL we are not permitted to borrow them
- Follow the book procedures for MeLCat for requesting media. Note that the loan period will be shorter (2 weeks) with no renewals.
- Videos (VHS and DVD), audio CDs, audiobooks, etc. can only be requested through MeLCat.
Document Delivery
- To request materials owned by SVSU's Zahnow Library simply request the item using ILLiad. Delivery will be as noted under articles and books.
