| | REGISTRATION PROCEDURES |
Students must register all their network device (ethernet address) with ITS. The registration process (outlined below under Instructions) will require you to identify yourself (SVSU username & password).
If you don't know your username, you can look find it while changing your password via the web at: https://www.svsu.edu/changepassword/ All new students (and those who forget their password) are required to change their password every semester. This can be done from any computer connected to the Internet (various kiosks and open computer labs on campus, including the Library, provide this access).
Through the registration process, a small program will be installed on all systems called the "Bradford Persistent Agent". This agent will be required for all systems that are connected to the campus network. The agent's task is to act as the conduit for security compliance enforcement Security compliance entails two key points - 1) updated operating systems, and 2) current/active anti-virus programs.
Registration Instructions (on-campus)
As soon as you have purchased and installed your network card & cable, you may:
- Using the ethernet "straight-thru" cable, connect your computer's ethernet card (NIC) to the data port in your room. Data ports are usually orange, and may be labelled with a number preceeded with the letter D. (Freshman rooms may have a black data port).
- Turn on your computer. If everything is connected properly, you'll see green lights blinking on your NIC.
- Launch your web browser, i.e. Internet Explorer or FireFox. Your browser should automatically take you to the ResNet Registration web page. If it doesn't, simply enter http://rc.svsu.edu/
- Click on Start next to Users who have a Network Account
- Enter your SVSU username and password, then click Download.
- Instructions for downloading and install the Bradford Persistent Agent can be found here.
All students must abide by the SVSU Acceptable Use Policy. Authenticating and registering your computer is an acknowledgement that you agree to its terms. - The system will authenticate your logon information and then proceed with a required scan of your computer. The scanning process will check for operating system vulnerabilities AND a current/updated installation of an approved anti-virus solution (SVSU provides a FREE anti-virus to registered users, go to our software download page for more information.). For a list of the approved anti-viruses, click here. The scanning procedure will also register your network card's ethernet address, upon which you may be asked to reboot your computer.
- Once the agent is succesfully downloaded, your computer will be granted access to the network resources. The agent will appear in the status bar on Windows computer systems - on Macs it will appear in hte Menu bar right hand side.
-
It is recommended that you disable File and Print Sharing on your computer for additional security. For more information, click here.
