We had a terrific turn out for a College of Business and Management alumni event at the Detroit Athletic Club Wednesday evening. The place was hopping! It was inspiring to be around so many alumni who continue to have very positive feelings toward SVSU. Over and over, I heard that they were so pleased that we came to them to host an event like this. Even my former students (there were about 10 of them) were glad they came. I was pleased to see a strong showing by faculty and staff from the College (Tony Bowrin, Rejeana Heinrich, Larry Kickham, Jaime Leyrer, Wayne Mackie, Mark McCartney, Kaustav Misra, Dom Monastiere, Joseph Ofori-Dankwa, George Puia, Tom Sesti, Izabela Szymanska, Rama Yelkur); my thanks to everyone in the College and in Alumni Relations who worked to make this a success. I expect we will be hosting more of these.
Speaking of alumni, we welcomed seven alumni authors to campus last week for the 2nd annual Alumni Author Showcase, which drew a great student crowd, as well as faculty and staff. These writers received degrees starting in 1974 and as recently as 2014; some are local, while others traveled from Houston and Orlando. My thanks to our colleagues in Academic and Student Affairs, Alumni Relations, Diversity Programs, the University Writing Committee and the students of Forever Red for hosting this fine event. Another alum, Jason Wolverton, returned to campus to moderate. For more information on our alumni authors and to stay current on the writing of our graduates, ask to join their Facebook group.
My thanks to all the faculty and staff who already have volunteered to participate in the upcoming Admissions Open House Saturday, Nov. 7. This is our single biggest Admissions event of the year, typically drawing some 1,000 visitors to campus, and it means a great deal to students and parents to talk to faculty and staff who will be teaching and working with them. If you are not committed in another capacity, we could use additional people to serve as greeters to welcome guests as they arrive and direct them to the faculty in their program(s) of interest. If you can assist, please contact Jen Pahl, director of Admissions, at email@example.com.
On Thursday we formally thanked Jeff Martin (second from left) and Jerome Yantz (second from right) for their dedicated service on the Board of Control (pictured at far left is current Board Chair Scott Carmona) and their unwavering support of SVSU. They have been and continue to be among our most committed and effective friends, and they consistently provided leadership to benefit our students, faculty and staff. Thanks to all who were able to attend.
I like big games, and they don’t get much bigger than our men’s soccer match up against Northwood tomorrow. Both teams are nationally ranked (SVSU is No. 11) and the winner will claim the GLIAC title. We host the match at Braddock Field tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, women’s soccer and volleyball have matches at Northwood, and football is home Saturday night against Hillsdale. I know our student-athletes would appreciate your support in the stands. Go Cards!
