President’s Weekly Update - Week of Monday, Sept. 9

HLC Accreditation Update

We continue to make progress in preparation for our visit by the Higher Learning Commission April 7-9 next year. The draft of our self-study is underway and soon will be put in final form. My thanks to the 65 colleagues who have been part of this important process.

50 Fest This Weekend

Our students continue to devise new and creative ways to celebrate SVSU’s anniversary and engage the broader community. Program Board is presenting “50 Fest” this weekend. Friday’s events are geared toward their fellow students, while Saturday’s activities include family-friendly entertainment for our surrounding community. Children and adults alike can climb aboard carnival rides, visit with clowns, enjoy balloon animals and other activities. It will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday in the parking lots near Curtiss Hall; admission is $5 per person. It should be fun.

‘Cardinal II’ to be Christened

Our new research vessel, “Cardinal II,” will be christened on campus Thursday, Sept. 19. The boat is a 24-foot vessel, ideal for water sampling and related activities; it provides safe access to Saginaw Bay and rivers alike. It serves as a mobile classroom for our students and faculty researchers participating in our interdisciplinary Saginaw Bay Environmental Science Institute, and should serve to improve our understanding of this body of water so critical to our region’s quality of life. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. behind the Science East building. Jon Allan, director of the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality’s Office of the Great Lakes, will serve as our featured invited speaker. Please join us to watch Deb Huntley try to break a champagne bottle over its hull.

Athletic Teams Open at Home This Weekend

Just a reminder that our football and men’s soccer teams open their home schedules this weekend. Football plays at 7 p.m. Saturday against Malone. Soccer takes to the pitch Sunday, Sept. 15; a short ceremony to dedicate Braddock Field will precede the match. I hope you can join us.
