Guests from Indian Sister School Visiting This Week

exterior of Rani Channamma School for girls

Our College of Education is hosting a delegation this week from Rani Channamma Residential Sainik School for Girls, a primary school in Kittur, India. Along with Carrollton Public Schools, our three institutions have enjoyed an educational partnership since 2008. The initiative involves an exchange program each spring that sends SVSU students and faculty along with one Carrollton teacher to India, while four students and two teachers from Rani Channamma come to Michigan. If you see our Indian visitors on campus this week, please make them feel welcome.

Author of ‘The Butler’ Talks Tonight; Basil Clark Gives Rush Lecture Thursday

Our fall slate of cultural and intellectual programming continues this week. Wil Haygood, author of “The Butler: A Witness to History,” will speak tonight (Monday, Sept. 30) at 7 p.m. in the Field Theatre for Performing Arts.  His book inspired the film that was recently no. 1 at the box office. Basil Clark will share his insight into SVSU’s history through stories of current and former colleagues when he delivers the annual Rush Lecture Thursday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. in Founders Hall.

Student Recruitment Efforts off to a Good Start

Class of 2014

While the current academic term has not yet reached the midway point, our recruiting efforts for fall 2014 are already well underway, as our admissions representatives are on the road visiting 550 high schools (out of roughly 700) across our state. Early indications are promising. We have received 536 more applications for 2014 freshmen, compared to this time a year ago. The number of prospective students coming to campus for our Saturday open house programs has nearly doubled compared to last year; 529 already have visited. While much work remains to be done, these positive signs are a reflection of hard work and dedication. Our primary fall open house is still to come on Saturday, Nov. 9; my thanks in advance to those colleagues who volunteer their time for this important event.
