SVSU Honored for Excellence in Diversity

HEED 2013

SVSU is being honored for our commitment to diversity and inclusion. INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine announced Thursday, Oct. 17 that we received the first-annual Higher Education in Diversity award, considered for colleges and universities nationally. The recognition means SVSU is featured in the magazine's November issue, along with 55 other institutions that earned the award. One aspect of our application that drew particular praise is the inclusion advocate program we have employed in our hiring practices since 2009. You can read more at

Our 50th anniversary Fall Focus lecture series continues this week with a talk and a recital by Eugenia Zukerman. She plans to talk about her experiences as a flutist, writer, journalist, TV correspondent, music administrator, Internet entrepreneur and teacher on Tuesday, Oct. 22.  The next night, Zukerman returns for a flute recital. A musician in high demand, she averages more than 30 international performances a year, and has collaborated with renowned artists including Emmanuel Ax, Yo-Yo Ma, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and the Shanghai String Quartet. Her work has earned her invitations to perform on programs such as NBC's Today, CBS's Morning Show. Both her lecture and her recital are at 7 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. I hope you can attend as your schedule permits.
