President’s Weekly Update - Week of Monday, March 31

Spring is Finally Here

I have finally delivered on better weather and the Tigers won on opening day.  I’m going to draw both of these to your attention and take credit before things change.

April’s Academic Angst

As the end of another academic year draws nearer, students’ stress levels rise.  Please remind them of the opportunities for assistance available to them, especially if they are struggling. The staff at the Academic Achievement Center do a fine job and they already have seen more than 9,000 visits during the winter semester. A special word of thanks to the faculty who volunteer there: your efforts on behalf of our students are appreciated.

First Meeting with Faculty Association

Last Friday, I had my first meeting with the executive board of the Faculty Association since becoming president. They all remembered my name and I was pleased to see how interested they are in what is going on around the state in terms of higher education. I look forward to our collective work to provide first-rate instruction with high standards for our students.

Appreciation for Adjunct Faculty

We say “thank you” to our adjunct instructors at their banquet this Friday. They make significant contributions to the quality of instruction here and often bring insight and knowledge from their work experiences that our students find valuable. Many of them have been committed to us for many years and we are fortunate to have them here.

All-University Awards Banquet

The following Friday, April 11 is our annual All-University Awards Banquet. Several of our distinguished and deserving colleagues will be recognized.  I hope to see you there.

HLC is Coming

This is the last time I’m going to remind you.  I mean it, because our site visitors from the Higher Learning Commission arrive on campus Sunday and begin their work next Monday. Thanks in advance to all of you who will greet them warmly and professionally and will demonstrate our preparedness. The full self-study and the executive summary are available online, so please spend some time familiarizing yourself with these, and then perform your job well.  If each of us does the good work expected of us, we can’t help but make a favorable impression.
