More than 530 of our students are expected to complete degrees this semester, including 472 individuals who plan to participate in the ceremony this Friday at 7:30 p.m. We also will be awarding an honorary degree to President Lee of Ming Chuan University, our sister institution. This is always a special occasion for these future alumni and their families; my thanks to all of you who have helped to make their SVSU experience successful and memorable.
The Board of Control has several important items to consider when it meets this Friday, including approval of a collective bargaining agreement with the Faculty Association. They also will review sabbatical proposals from 10 faculty members, as well as an auxiliary budget proposal that will set housing and dining rates for the next two fiscal years.
Once again, we have teams of students who will be spending vacation time in service through our Alternative Breaks program. Next week, students will be traveling to Grand Rapids to work with Habitat for Humanity, and the week of January 5, we have student teams assisting the following:
These are extraordinary learning opportunities, and each of these student groups will apply the lessons learned on their Alternative Break to service projects in our region.
Thanks to the grounds crew for their good work this morning to clear the campus for safe passage at the start of final exams. Today’s inclement weather is a reminder of the valuable service they perform all year long.
Finally, I hope to see all of you at the annual Holiday Luncheon this Friday. This tradition always provides a fitting occasion for us to count our blessings, including the friendship of one another.
