President’s Weekly Update - Week of Monday, April 7

HLC Visitors Have Arrived

The team of eight site visitors from the Higher Learning Commission has arrived on campus.  I had a chance to meet them over dinner last night and for those of you who have been meeting with them over the course of the day, I’m sure you’ll agree that they are a fine group of people. Their visit provides us with an opportunity to confirm the evidence we presented in our self-study. We expect many positive interactions with students, faculty and staff during the remainder of their time here.

Provost Search Update

The provost search committee and I met Friday and we discussed a wide range of important issues concerning SVSU and some key requirements for the next provost.  We reviewed all four finalists in detail and the matter is now before me. I continue to receive feedback from key constituents as I deliberate. I know how important this decision is; rest assured, I will select the individual I believe will be in the best interests of the university.

Keep up the Good Work

Today I detected Laurie Siminske, senior secretary, in the act of diligently performing her duties. She was checking internal signage in Zahnow Library to review consistency among existing University signs. My thanks to her and everyone across this campus who shows up – on time – and works hard to make this place a little better for all of us.

Awards Banquet: Final Reminder

This is your final reminder for the All-University Awards Banquet, because if you wait to receive another reminder next week, you’ll have missed the banquet. Seriously, we have many colleagues across this institution who are doing fine work and this is our primary opportunity each year to recognize them.  I hope to see you Friday.

Final Exams Ahead

Believe it or not, final exams begin three weeks from today: Monday, April 28. This means some students are likely to be scrambling in the coming weeks, especially with Easter falling late this year.  I know this is often despite your best prodding and encouragement, but I hope you will prod and encourage your students who need help to take advantage of extended library hours (starting April 20), visits to the Academic Achievement Center, and whatever other resources they may need. This week’s accreditation visit serves as a timely reminder that we must maintain high standards, but we also have an obligation to provide students with opportunities and resources to meet those standards.
