The Board of Directors of the SVSU Foundation will meet this week. Among other business, they will discuss plans for the 50th anniversary fundraising campaign. We are fortunate indeed to have many dedicated friends who serve without compensation to raise private support for the university. The list of those who serve on the board can be found on the Foundation Website. If you see them, please thank them for their service.
Eleven years have passed since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The SVSU Student Association will hold a candlelight vigil to remember the victims Tuesday at 9 p.m. near the Edwards Bell Tower. I know they would appreciate the presence of faculty and staff who can attend.
Also on Tuesday, General Motors will donate 1,000 pounds of aluminum for use in SVSU’s Foundry by students and faculty in their metal-casting learning and research. We enjoy an ongoing relationship with GM, especially its Saginaw Metal Castings and Bay City Powertrain facilities. This is yet another example of our partnerships with many businesses and organizations throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region.
You’ve likely heard mention that our tutoring services have been consolidated and are now located in Zahnow Library. The Writing Center remains on the third floor, while tutoring support for biology, chemistry, math, physics, computer sciences, social sciences, technology are all found on the second floor. As the semester begins in earnest, I encourage you to remind your students of these available resources, and if you haven’t visited the Center for yourself, I hope you can find time to do so.
The strategic planning task force remains hard at work, developing a new guiding document for the institution. All will have a chance to review a draft during campus-wide open forums in October; stay tuned for more information on dates and times.
