President’s Weekly Update for Monday, March 25

Intercultural Night This Wednesday

Many of our international students will share their native customs during the 12th annual Intercultural Night this Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts. They will represent traditions from five continents as they sing, dance and perform.

In celebration of our anniversary, they have chosen “Around the World 50 Years Ago” as this year’s theme. This event always provides good entertainment and is an opportunity for us to show support to those students who hail from distant shores and are so eager to share their culture with us. I hope you will consider attending, and encourage domestic students to attend, as schedules permit. Tickets are required and are available through the SVSU Box Office or the International Programs office.

Extraordinary Opportunity to Learn Mandarin in Taiwan

While we welcome those international students who choose to study here, we also seek to encourage our domestic students to broaden their horizons, and our sister institution, Ming Chuan University in Taiwan, has recently offered them a remarkable opportunity. Our students may participate in a four-week introductory Mandarin language program May 27 to June 28.

All academic expenses are covered, leaving students to pay only for their airfare and meals. At least four academic credits are expected to transfer to SVSU upon the students' return. If you know of students who would be well suited for this, please encourage them to contact Jules Gehrke in Academic Affairs, Elizabeth Rich in the Honors Program, or Becky Griffin in the Study Abroad office.  more...

Fall Registration Fast Approaching

Final exams for the current term are still a few weeks away, but it is not too early for students to make preparations for the fall semester. Registration for next fall begins Monday, April 8, and staff in the Academic Advisement Center begin meeting with returning students this week to help them evaluate course schedules, review degree audits, etc.  A number of tools are available online through Cardinal Direct, as well.  Please use this opportunity to remind your students to use this time to plan ahead for next year.
